1. Benefits and conditions
With the ‘Dual Career' Programme, Sapienza offers a range of services and benefits for those who enrol in a degree programme and simultaneously practise sport at a professional level, in accordance with the provisions specified in paragraph 2 of this article. The programme offers concrete opportunities to successfully balance academic and sporting commitments and maximise potential in both fields.
The 'Dual Career' Programme includes:
- financial benefits;
flexible conditions for exams and lessons; tutoring; recognition of CFUs (university credits), etc., as set out in the 'Dual Career' Regulations available on the university website (Academic Senate Resolution No. 83 of 26/03/2024). Go to page
With regard to financial benefits, the scheme provides for the annual payment of a flat fee for enrolment in the degree programme of €30 (+ regional tax + stamp duty) if all the following conditions are met:

compliance with the university requirements;
-
compliance with the sporting requirements specified in letters a), b), c) and d);
-
enrolment within the legal time period of the degree programme
-
absence of a more favourable financial benefit (Articles 44, 56 and 57).
To achieve “student athlete” status and participate in the 'Dual Career' programme, you must meet the requirements specified below:
A University requirements:
-
enrolment within the second year ‘fuori corso’ (beyond the standard duration of the course) in first and second level courses (bachelor's degree, single-cycle master's degree and unified master's degree, second level two-year degree programme);

in the case of enrolment in the first year: achievement of at least 6 CFUs (university credits) in the first exam session;
-
If enrolled in years after the first: achievement of at least 18 CFUs (university credits) for each academic year of enrolment;
-
If enrolled in a PhD programme or a specialisation course, the terms specified in this article are extended, if applicable, to this case as well.
B Sporting requirements (you must fall into one of the following categories in the calendar year of application or the previous one):
B1. you have won Olympic, Paralympic, absolute or category (Italian, European or world) games in winter and summer Olympic and/or Paralympic disciplines;
B2 you have been called up by your Federation to represent Italy in winter and summer Olympic and/or Paralympic disciplines;
B3. you have taken part in preparation programmes for the Summer and Winter Olympic/Paralympic Games;
B4. you belong to a professional team sports Club referred to in Law No. 91/1981 (law on professional sports) that participates in federal championships and has ranked in the top 3 positions;
B5. for individual sports, you have participated in an absolute or category national championship or have received a call-up to an absolute or category national team to participate in an international sporting event;
B6. you have been recognised as an “Athlete of National Interest” by the relevant National Sports Federation officially recognised by CONI or by the relevant Sports Federations officially recognised by CIP (Italian Paralympic Committee) for Paralympic activities (FSP 4FSNP5);
B7. you have represented the University in national and international competitive events (Universiade, World/European/National University Championships);
B8. you have been called up to the CUSI national teams or the CUS teams in reference to the University Championships;
B9. you belong to a military sports group with an ‘athlete role’.
A. Criminal or disciplinary conditions:

You must not have any final criminal convictions for intentional offences punishable by imprisonment for more than one year or by disqualification from public office for more than one year;

You must not have received any definitive sporting disqualifications or suspensions totalling more than one year in the last ten years, unless you have been rehabilitated;
-
You must not have been sanctioned following a violation of the Nado-Italia Anti-Doping Rules or the provisions of the WADA World Anti-Doping Code.
B. You will be permanently excluded from the Dual Career Programme if:

You no longer meet the university requirements;
-
You no longer meet the sporting requirements;
-
You do not meet the criminal or disciplinary conditions;
-
you are found to be in serious and unjustified breach of the duties set out in Article 14 of the Regulations for the Dual Career Programme for Student Athletes, based on the assessment of the Sapienza Sport Centre Commission;
-
you are not up to date with the payment of the single all-inclusive programme registration fee.
2. Procedure
Applications to join the Dual Career programme must be submitted annually and are assessed by the Sapienza Sport Centre Commission, which accepts or rejects them within one month of submission.
The application must be submitted in the manner specified on the page https://www.uniroma1.it/it/node/28758,
attaching the documents certifying your sporting requirements and that you meet the necessary conditions.
The documents must be issued:
-
if you meet the sporting requirements of point B4: by the relevant national federation or sports club to which you belong;
-
if you meet the sporting requirements of point B7: by the Sapienza Sport Service Centre.
3. Deadlines
For the academic year 2025-2026, applications must be submitted within 15 calendar days of the deadline for payment of the first instalment of the enrolment fees or enrolment fees for your degree programme.
