The Italian research doctorate (PhD) is the highest academic degree awarded by universities in most fields of study. The PhD programme is open to applicants who hold a Masters Degree or equivalent degree obtained abroad. PhD programmes train students to carry out scientific research and improve their research methodologies. A Research Doctorate is awarded after 3 years of study, the completion of assigned research activities and the presentation of a final dissertation.
Call for pre-selection for Citizens of the People's Republic of China - XLII Cycle - Academic Year 2026/2027
The call for applications for Chinese candidates for admission to Sapienza's PhD programmes for the 42nd cycle - academic year 2026/2027 - has been published, in accordance with the agreement between Sapienza and the China Scholarship Council (CSC).
The list of PhD programs for which applications can be submitted is provided in the Appendix, which is an integral part of the call.
The deadline for submitting applications is February 24, 2026, at 14:00 (local time - CET).

Sapienza University of Rome announces the following exam-based open additional call for admission to the 40th Cycle of PhD Programmes and PhD Programmes of National Interest. The legal duration of all PhD programmes is three years.
Applications must be submitted by July 21, 2025 at 23:59 pm (local time) without any exception.
