On January 11, 2024, Rector's Decree 56/2024 Policy di Ateneo sulla gestione dei dati della ricercawas published. Research data refers to information, in any format, within the scope of a specific research activity conducted by the Author, necessary to validate the results of the research itself. It may be expressed in numerical, descriptive, audio or video format and may be unprocessed or processed.

Sapienza University of Rome recognises the fundamental importance of data produced during research activities as a valid scientific result.

Sapienza policy for Open Access promotes and places, among the institutional duties of the University, open access to scientific literature to improve its visibility, increase its impact and communicate knowledge and scientific advances to civil society, ensuring its long-term availability (as per Academic Senate resolution no. 50 of February 11, 2020, and Rectoral Decree no. 699 of February 27, 2020).

Before approving the policy, two questionnaires were sent to two different targets: one to the entire academic community; the other to Department Directors only, in order to assess the strategic and organisational aspects of Open Access within Sapienza.
