MOOCs are free or paid online courses open to anyone and organised by universities or private companies. You can take a MOOC from anywhere in the world: all you need is an internet connection and an email address to register with the MOOC platform of your choice. The term MOOC was first coined in 2008 by the writer and researcher George Siemens in connection with an open online course entitled Connectivism and Connective Knowledge, in which 2,300 users took part free of charge.

About MOOCs
MOOC, acronym explained:
Massive: a large number of people can participate at the same time. Open: anyone can register and participate, there are no prerequisites, the learning materials provided are copyright free and can be shared. Online: Courses take place only on virtual platforms over the web, not in physical classrooms. Course: Each path consists of one course, which may be divided into several sessions.
These courses provide a flexible way to acquire new skills and knowledge through a continuous learning experience. Once enrolled, there is no obligation to complete the course and it is possible to leave the course at any time.
In general, this can be useful for taking a MOOC:
- sufficient digital skills
- Language skills (most are in English)
- a good level of personal motivation
- Self-management skills in learning.
Courses can take place at certain times of the year or be available at any time: you can decide when to log in and how much time to devote to them (self-paced mode). It is also possible to take several courses at the same time. In some cases, there are also live lectures where you can interact with the lecturer to ask questions and clarify doubts.
MOOC platforms offer a wide range of courses covering different disciplines: each subject can be covered at different levels to facilitate learning.
Through MOOCs, it is indeed possible to earn university credits, professional certificates and certificates of passing an exam from some of the world's most prestigious universities and companies, which can be useful to add to a CV or LinkedIn profile.
They are open to everyone, especially students. You can choose courses that are not part of your curriculum, you can also use the course for your education and culture outside your degree.
MOOC courses and any certificates will not affect your university career in terms of average or CFUs, as they are EXTRA courses and not part of the curriculum. They are free of charge, unless a certificate is required.
MOOC structure
Overview: For each course, the following are indicated: objectives, lesson plan, mode and duration, tools and materials available. In addition to final tests, there may be intermediate assessments and assignments during the course.
How long it takes: No rush, it is possible to take the chosen course(s) in your own time, there is no specific end date.
How long each lesson is: The individual lessons of each course can last between 5 minutes and an hour, depending on the course and the lecturer, you can find courses with more micro-lessons or courses with fewer lessons but with a longer duration, the average is between 10 minutes and half an hour.
Tests during the course to validate learning: During the course, at the end of each module, there are quizzes to assess learning and progress.
How to register for a MOOC
To sign up for a course, you need to register (JOIN FOR FREE) on the COURSERA platform. Just use your email address and there are no costs and/or special requests from the platform.
You can choose from the available courses by using the "Search" function, by browsing the categories in the "Explore" menu or by clicking directly on the links in the course catalogue below.
