1. Benefits and conditions
The ‘Meritorious Student’ benefit is awarded to those who have obtained their high school diploma or degree with the highest grades and provides for a flat-rate annual enrolment fee of just €30, plus the regional tax (€140) and stamp duty (€16), provided that the requirements specified below are met.
A. For three-year and single-cycle degrees
The benefit applies if the secondary school diploma is awarded with the highest grades in the year of enrolment.
Therefore, if you enrol in a three-year or single-cycle bachelor's degree programme in 2025-2026, you can access this benefit if:
-
you have been awarded your secondary school diploma in 2024-2025 with a grade of 100 or 100 with honours;
-
you enrol in a three-year degree programme or a second level degree programme for 2025-2026;
-
you do not have a more favourable benefit (Articles 44, 56 and 57).
B. For two-year master's degrees
If you enrol in a second level two-year degree programme in 2025-2026, you can access this benefit if:
-
you were awarded a bachelor's degree from Sapienza in 2024-2025 with a grade of 110 or 110 cum laude and obtained the “Meritorious Student” benefit for your entire previous educational career;
-
or you were awarded your degree from another Italian university in 2024-2025 with a grade of 110 or 110 cum laude and you met all the requirements for the “Meritorious Student” benefit (points A. and D.);
-
you enrol in a second level two-year degree programme Sapienza for 2025-2026;
-
you do not have a more favourable benefit (Articles 44, 56 and 57).
C. You cannot access this benefit if:
-
you have a foreign qualification;
-
you lost the benefit in the previous year or years;
-
you are enrolled “fuori corso” (beyond the standard duration of the programme).
D. You can retain the benefit for subsequent years if:
-
you earn at least 40 CFUs (university credits) (36 CFUs for healthcare professions programmes) by 10 August of each year;
-
you complete all the CFUs (university credits) required for previous academic years;
-
you obtain an average (arithmetic) grade of 28/30 in all your exams and no grade lower than 27.
E. The following are also valid for the granting of the benefit:
-
the CFUs (university credits) required by the Manifesto of your degree programme, which are assessed as “pass/fail” instead of grades out of 30;
-
CFUs (university credits) obtained for the validation of exams taken abroad as part of mobility programmes.
Qualifying examinations and exams must be recorded through the Infostud system.
F. The following are not valid for the granting of the benefit:
-
CFUs (university credits) relating to qualifying examinations and/or exemptions which, in some degree programmes, are ongoing assessments that contribute to the passing of an exam and are therefore not recorded in the information system;
-
CFUs (university credits) obtained by taking extracurricular exams pursuant to Article 6 of Royal Decree No. 1269/38 (Article 25);
-
CFUs (university credits) obtained by taking individual exams (Article 26);
-
CFUs (university credits) obtained as validation for exam recognition or course shortening (Article 22).
G. You lose the benefit if:
-
you change university system (Article 31);
-
you transfer to another programme with credits recognition (Article 6);
-
you enrol part-time (Art. 30);
-
you fail an exam, even just once;
-
you enrol ‘fuori corso’ (beyond the standard duration of the programme).
The administrative office will carry out regular auditing to confirm or remove the benefit.
2. Procedures
A. If you enrol in a three-year degree programme or a single-cycle programme, you must declare your status as a “meritorious student” on Infostud at the time of enrolment. The procedure is available on this page https://www.uniroma1.it/it/node/24162
B. If you have been awarded your degree from Sapienza, you must declare your status as a “meritorious student” on Infostud when you enrol in the first year of your master's degree. The procedure is available on this page https://www.uniroma1.it/it/node/24162
C. If you have been awarded your degree from another Italian university, you must:
-
pay the first instalment in full by the deadlines;
-
submit an application attaching a self-certification of your previous academic career showing that you meet the requirements. The application must be submitted according to the specified instructions on this page: https://www.uniroma1.it/it/node/28758
The administrative office will carry out the auditing and add the benefit to your profile.
Adjustments will be applied to subsequent instalments.
