To meet degree requirements in the College, a student must obtain credit for 4200 units (i.e., 42 courses on the UChicago quarter system), distributed amongst general education requirements, major program requirements, minor program requirements, and electives. A minimum of 3800 units of credit out of the total 4200 units must be earned by course enrollment (i.e., not credit by examination). In addition, at least half of the requirements for any major or minor must be met by course enrollment.

All students receive credit toward their degrees by taking courses in the College. In addition, students may be awarded credit, placed into a higher level course, and/or granted fulfillment of a degree requirement as a result of any or all of the following:

Importantly, students who have earned units of credit for a specific course via these methods will forgo that credit if they complete an equivalent course in the College. Students should consult their academic adviser for guidance regarding registering for the appropriate courses upon receiving the results of these exams.
