Many Voices, One UChicago

The University of Chicago is a place where different perspectives drive inquiry, fuel connection, and shape a vibrant intellectual culture

Our Community

The University of Chicago community is a rich mix of individuals who, with their own distinctive viewpoints, contribute to the intellectually challenging culture of the University through academic pursuits as well as extracurricular interests. In the words of President Robert Zimmer, "We have an obligation to see that the greatest variety of perspectives is brought to bear on the issues before us as scholars and citizens. We therefore celebrate our tradition of inclusion and recognize that our success as an institution depends on its ongoing renewal." As such, rigorous inquiry demands the input of differing perspectives. UChicago provides support for all perspectives, through both Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) and individual campus resources.

Academic Exploration

The foundation of the UChicago academic experience is our robust Core Curriculum. Regardless of their academic background or interest, every student will engage with the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, biological sciences, arts, and foreign language. Regardless of their major, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in another culture by studying abroad in more than 30 locations and by learning one of over 50 different languages.

The University of Chicago provides several undergraduate academic programs for the interdisciplinary exploration of various cultures and communities. These include, among others, majors and minors in topics such as Chicago Studies, Latin American Studies, East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Jewish Studies, South Asian Languages and Civilizations, as well as a range of individual courses in other areas.

Supporting Lived Experiences

The University of Chicago provides dedicated spaces and staff to foster a safe and supportive environment for all our community members. The Spiritual Life Office offers a team of Religious and Spiritual advisors with different expertise and perspectives for students, while Chabad, the Newberger Hillel Center, the Canterbury Club at Brent House, the Lutheran Campus Ministry, the Calvert House, and the Muslim Students Association provide opportunities for the larger community.

The Multicultural Student Advisory Council (MSAC) includes student volunteers who work to make students aware of the diversity of thought and experience that exists on campus. The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA), located at 5710 South Woodlawn Avenue, supports the academic success of students of color at the University of Chicago, builds an inclusive campus community, and contains the Center for Identity + Inclusion, which works to create an inclusive and safe community for all students and allies at the University of Chicago, while recognizing multiple and intersecting identities.

Resources and programs such as the Student Ombuds Office, Student Disability Services, College Academic Advising, and the Dean-on-Call ensure support for all students.
