Our City Our Home

The University of Chicago is located in the historic, residential neighborhood of Hyde Park, just 20 minutes south of downtown Chicago. This location provides students the best of two worlds: a comfortable home in a neighborhood with a college-town feel, and easy access to everything else going on in a world-class city.

A Global City

In 1893, Chicago announced itself to the world when it hosted the World Columbian Exposition, a major historical event that drew 27.5 million visitors to the city. Those visitors would have seen the new campus of the University of Chicago, which was founded three years earlier, still under construction. Today, Chicago is the third largest city in the United States. It is a hub for trade and commerce, home to a Federal Reserve Bank, numerous Fortune 500 companies, and one of the world's busiest airports. The birthplace of the skyscraper, Chicago still prides itself on architectural gems with the Chicago River and Lake Michigan for stunning settings. The arts and culture flourish, with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of shows and concerts, world-class museums, one of the world's largest public libraries.

Chicago has grown to become a truly global city in the last 150 years, as evidenced by the contributions of each of its 77 distinctive neighborhoods. Here, you'll never have to venture far to find a familiar community or a new experience. Find your new favorite food in Greektown, eat deep dish pizza in Lincoln Park, cheer on the Chicago Bulls at the United Center, and listen to soul, jazz, and the blues at venues all across the city.

While campus and the city have changed considerably, the University is still positioned to draw from and contribute to the life of this great city.

CTA U-Pass and ArtsPass

To help students access everything Chicago offers, the University provides students with a free CTA U-Pass and ArtsPass. The U-Pass provides unlimited, free access to the robust CTA bus and rail transport system during regular term times, while the ArtsPass provides free or discounted admission to over 70 different artistic and cultural institutions throughout the city.

Campus Resources

The University of Chicago is committed to supporting the health, safety, and well-being of its students, faculty, and staff. We offer Student Health Service, Student Counseling Service, Health Promotion and Wellness, and numerous resources for student safety in an urban campus environment. The Student Health Service, part of the University of Chicago Medical Center, is available by appointment for any student who wants to meet with a health professional. The Student Counseling Service is available for individual and group therapy, medication management, support groups, ADHD services, and offers an Academic Skills Assessment Program and classes on topics such as note-taking and speed-reading. Students also call on their academic advisers and Resident Heads in their House for personal support. The Department of Safety and Security and certified University of Chicago Police Department offer services including registering your bike, accompanying you if you're unsure of where you're going at night or are traveling alone, and educating you in self-defense classes. Additionally, UChicago has a network of blue-light emergency phones and nighttime transportation around Hyde Park.
