Recruiting Policies and Student Responsibilities

The policies below apply to all students and Career Advancement programs, including employer recruiting events and the Jeff Metcalf Internship Program. Incoming students are invited to complete the guidelines using a Handshake survey. If you have any questions, please contact careeradvancement@uchicago.edu.

By accessing the UChicago Handshake platform or participating in any Career Advancement program, you agree to abide by these guidelines. Incoming first-year students and transfer students will review these guidelines during their O-Week meeting with their assigned career adviser.

2025-26 Career Advancement Student Guidelines

Navigating the recruiting process to achieve your goals while balancing academics and extracurricular activities can be both exciting and challenging. UChicago Career Advancement is committed to supporting students throughout this process, including sharing guidelines and professional standards that you can utilize to guide your activities and navigate decisions. Your shared commitment to these professional guidelines provides a foundation for a successful recruiting process where you can best represent yourself as a candidate, the institution, and UChicago community.

A UChicago candidate:

Below is a summary of recruiting best practices along with detailed information to follow. Career Advancement is available to provide guidance and support you in the recruiting process throughout the year. Contact your career adviser or email our team.

Summary of Recruiting Best Practices

To ensure strong relationships with employers and ongoing opportunities for students, we discourage multiple interview cancellations. If you need to cancel an interview, contact us at erd@uchicago.edu or 773-702-7040 to inform us promptly of the reason for your cancellation and to discuss next steps based on your unique individual circumstances. We recommend that you send an email to the employer contact and thank them for the opportunity.

For the benefit of all UChicago students, we highly value our employer relationships and discourage actions which take away opportunities from your peers. Accordingly, being a no-call, no-show to a scheduled interview on-campus or virtually is considered a violation of professional conduct which can result in possible suspension of your recruiting privileges in Handshake.

Evaluating a job offer requires your careful and full consideration. If you’re excited about the opportunity and would like additional time to make a decision, you may ask the employer for an extension. You’re welcome to proactively consult with your career adviser to discuss communication and explore offer considerations. Contact your career adviser or email our team.

A verbal or email acceptance of an offer is considered a commitment made in good faith. Be mindful of language you use in conversation or writing that creates the impression that you are accepting offer. Once you have accepted an offer:

It is unethical to “renege” (pull out) of an already accepted offer. Your decision and actions in this situation may negatively impact your reputation, limit future opportunities for your peers, and harm the University’s relationships with employers.

We understand that sometimes personal circumstances can change. If you are considering withdrawing from an already accepted position before or after you have already started for any reason, you should discuss with your career adviser before finalizing any decisions. Reneging on an offer is an act that demonstrates a lack of professionalism and integrity and therefore may result in loss of recruiting privileges, including access to Handshake.

If you renege on an offer funded through the Jeff Metcalf Internship Program, you will forfeit your Metcalf stipend for that internship period. The Metcalf stipend is tied to the internship - not the student- and is awarded based on host organization eligibility and selection criteria. Reneging on a College-funded opportunity forgoes your ability to receive Metcalf funding for that term.

Most students prioritize full-time summer internships, which are typically defined as 8+weeks or 320+total hours, to gain meaningful professional experience and contribute fully to an organization.

While pursuing multiple internships may seem appealing, it can make it difficult to put your best foot forward and fully engage in either opportunity. Navigating competing work schedules, deadlines, and personal commitments can impact your performance, quality of your experience, and well-being during that time.

If you intend to pursue more than one opportunity during the same time period, please meet with your career adviser before beginning the recruiting process for a second experience. You are expected to:

Requests for early finals must be discussed directly with the appropriate faculty member, and it is at each professor’s discretion to accommodate this type of request.

By submitting your application materials, you authorize Career Advancement to share information, including information that may be considered as education records under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, with individuals outside the University, including employers.
