#### LEARN THE LINGO...

Most graduate student financial support comes through your **UF degree program** or **non-UF sources** in these forms:

**Assistantships** provide you with funding in exchange for working as a teaching assistant, researcher, or academic support staff. They usually include a stipend (biweekly paycheck), tuition wavier at in-state rates, and health insurance coverage. You do not need to repay them. To apply for a UF assistantship from your degree program’s unit, use this form: [Application for Fellowship or Assistantship](https://graduateschool.ufl.edu/media/gradufledu/pdf/afa.pdf). Check beforehand with that unit for its deadlines, requirements, and procedures.

**Fellowships** are often long-term, competitive, merit-based funding that enables you to concentrate full-time on your studies. They usually include a stipend, tuition waiver at in-state rates, and health insurance coverage for a set number of years. Other fellowships are short-term and offer partial funding to cover the dissertation phase of your Ph.D. program. You do not need to repay them. Some are funded by UF departments and colleges; others, by non-UF sources. To apply for a UF fellowship from your degree program’s unit, use this form: [Application for Fellowship or Assistantship](https://graduateschool.ufl.edu/media/gradufledu/pdf/afa.pdf). Check beforehand with that unit for its deadlines, requirements, and procedures.

**Grants** are usually limited, need-based funding that you do not need to repay. They are available through different sources. One example is the UF Graduate Grant from the UF Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships — click here to learn more: [UF Graduate Grant](https://www.sfa.ufl.edu/types-of-aid/grants/).

**Loans** are funding that you borrow and must pay back. Options at UF include Unsubsidized Loans and Graduate PLUS Loans. To learn more, click here: [Unsubsidized Loans](https://www.sfa.ufl.edu/types-of-aid/loans/subsidized-and-unsubsidized-loans/) and [Graduate PLUS Loans](https://www.sfa.ufl.edu/types-of-aid/loans/graduate-plus/).

**Scholarships** come in many forms, amounts, and lengths of time. Some are need-based; others, merit-based. They provide funding that you do not need to repay. To explore graduate student scholarship options, click here: [UF Scholarship Search Engine](https://www.sfa.ufl.edu/search/).

#### PLAN AHEAD WITH GRAD$ENSE

The **Grad$ense** website — an initiative of the [Council of Graduate Schools (CGS)](https://cgsnet.org/) generously supported by [TIAA](https://www.tiaa.org/public) — can help you plan financially for graduate school, whether you’re just starting out or already enrolled. Use it to learn what funding options are available for which degrees, plan ahead with its debt-to-earnings calculator, and create a budget that will see you through your program.
