Focus on highlighting your CGPA, research experience, and any skills directly relevant to the project you're applying for.

Which University did you apply for a research internship, and what was the name of theproject?

I applied to WMG(Warwick Manufacturing Group), University of Warwick. The project focused on optimising the battery coating process. Essentially, during the

manufacturing of battery electrodes, there's a coating process involved, and our goal was to optimize this by predicting viscosity accurately. Unfortunately, I don't recall the exact title of the project.

Was it Onsite or Remote?

It was an onsite internship.

Can you briefly describe the research project you worked on?

In lithium-ion battery manufacturing, the electrodes are coated with a slurry, and the flow properties of this slurry are crucial. By accurately predicting its viscosity, we could optimise the coating process, which would, in turn, help reduce overall

manufacturing costs and potentially lower the price of electric vehicles. This project was centered around improving that optimization.

What are the selection criteria, and does the CGPA matter?

Yes, CGPA matters a lot. In my case, my CGPA was just above 8, which was

considered decent. Aside from CGPA, your CV plays a significant role. Having prior research experience, whether under a professor or through internships, is crucial. A strong CV with relevant research can set you apart, and your department might also influence your chances.

What previous experience do you have that you think was beneficial for this internship?

I had done a research internship at ISB in data science and another internship at IIT KGP under a professor in machine learning. However, the main reason I was shortlisted for this WMG internship was my BTP(Bachelor’s project), which was on transfer learning. The WMG battery project was also focused on transfer learning, so my BTP aligned perfectly. During the interview, most of the conversation revolved around my BTP.

Were there any significant challenges you faced during your research? How did youovercome them?

As a pure vegetarian, finding vegetarian food in the UK was challenging, but I

managed by connecting with other vegetarian friends. Academically, I didn't face

many difficulties during the project, except perhaps adapting to my professor's accent, which was a bit different.

How do these types of internships contribute to the academic or career goals of

students?

If you're aiming for a research career, such internships open doors to pursuing a

PhD. They add significant value to your CV, making you a more attractive candidate for both academia and industry positions. Even in job placements through CDC, companies with research profiles, like Adobe for AI research, often look for candidates with strong research experience.

Can you describe a typical day in the lab or research facility?

My work was mostly computer-based, so I didn't engage in experimental tasks. I had a setup in the office and worked there three days a week. On other days, I worked remotely or explored the city. There was no pressure to work long hours; I typically worked from around 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM with a break for lunch.

How did you fund your research internship abroad? Did you apply for any grants orscholarships?

The internship was paid, so I didn't need to apply for additional scholarships. I did apply for a few, but typically, scholarships aren't provided for paid internships.

What was it like adapting to the cultural environment of the host country? What did you enjoy most about living and working there?

I loved the experience! The university helped us socialize by organizing events, and I even started attending church on Sundays, which was a wonderful way to meet new people. I enjoyed interacting with British locals and appreciated their distinct accent. It was a great cultural experience, especially in Birmingham, where the accent reminded me of ‘Peaky Blinders’.

Would you recommend the institution or country where you completed your internshipto others? Why or why not?

Absolutely! Who wouldn’t want to go abroad for three months, fully funded? You gain valuable knowledge, experience a new culture, and improve your social skills. It’s a great opportunity to expand your network and learn how to adapt to different environments.

How can someone tailor their CV to highlight relevant skills and experiences for aresearch internship?

Focus on highlighting your CGPA, research experience, and any skills directly

relevant to the project you're applying for. Unlike industry internships, you don’t

necessarily need to showcase leadership positions (POR) or extracurriculars, but if you have them, you can include them as they might still catch a professor’s attention.

How did the Students' International Relations Cell help you in getting this internship?

I was active on the International Relations (IR) portal, and that’s how I came across this opportunity. The IR Cell offers numerous projects, both onsite and remote. Although I personally prefer onsite projects, remote ones are also beneficial for building your profile.

What advice would you give to someone considering a research internship abroad?

Make sure your profile stands out. Build research experience before applying and maintain a strong CGPA. These two factors can significantly boost your chances of being selected for a research internship abroad.
