German skills for studying

For German-taught degree programmes, international applicants and German applicants with a foreign school-leaving qualification have to provide evidence of a language examination for university admission. A corresponding language certificate must be submitted with the application (unless you are applying for a master’s course that is taught in English; other conditions also apply to students within the ERASMUS exchange programme. You will find information about this here.).
All language certificates have to be issued in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF).
Language certificates for starting the course immediately
- Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (German Language Examination for University Admission – DSH) with an overall result of at least DSH 2
- Test "Deutsch als Fremdsprache für Studienbewerber" (German as a Foreign Language for University Applicants – TestDaF) with an overall result of at least TestDaF 4 in all sections.
- German Language Diploma of the Conference of State Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs - Level II (DSD II)
- A passed German examination within the framework of the assessment test
- A passed C2 examination of the Goethe Institute in Germany or abroad
- Telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule (only the levels "very good", "good" and "satisfactory")
- Other certificates (e.g. a German studies diploma) can be recognised on a case-by-case basis.
- Applicants with German as their mother language have to submit at least the following, if the above mentioned language certificates are not available:\
- German Abitur\
- Proof of at least 4 school years at a German-speaking school
Language certificates for participation in the DSH examination
- C1 certificate
- B2 certificate + evidence of a further German course up to C1 level
- DSH 1 certificate
- Test DaF 2x3+2x4
- telc German C1 University with the result "sufficient"
Important note: all Applicants for International Relations (Bachelor + Master), Medicine, Human Medicine, Dentistry, Midwifery (Bachelor), Psychology with Focus on Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy (Master) and Medical Radiation Sciences (Master) already have to provide evidence of sufficient German skills with their application. An application for participation at the DSH examination is not possible in this case.
Language certificates for application for the preparatory course/German course
- B2 certificate or
- B1 certificate (as well DSD I) + latest Certificate of participation of a further course (at least B2 level)
- Test DaF 4x3
We recommend that you complete a B2 course before the admission test, as the admission test is at a B2 level.

Applicants without German skills
If you are unable to provide evidence of German language skills, an application to TU Dresden is unfortunately not possible (unless you are applying for a master’s course that is taught in English).
The minimum requirement for an application for the preparatory German course is the provision of a German B1 certificate + a certificate of participation of a B2 course. Applicants for the preparatory college also have to submit a German B1 certificate with their application.
German courses are offered by a variety of language schools in Dresden for linguistic preparation or for the acquisition of basic/intermediate skills. The costs of the courses must generally be borne by the participants themselves.
