Energy and Information Flows in Active Matter
Living matter is characterized by the robust emergence of biological structure and function from fluxes of mass, energy and information. These fluxes, operating far from thermodynamic equilibrium, are spatiotemporally coordinated to robustly generate dynamic structures that enable functions at molecular, cellular and tissue scales.
Our aim is to reveal physical principles that underlie the emergent dynamic organization of the living state of matter. To do so, a new type of physics, the physics of life, will be harnessed, to investigate how robust spatiotemporal structures that enable function emerge in living systems. A theoretical framework will be developed, to incorporate metabolism, information processing and cross-scale feedback into active matter theory.
