The support offered by student tutors is only one aspect of the various mentoring programs the International Office and TU Dresden provide.
TU Dresden's tutors offer support for all international students in their respective faculties. This support encompasses two phases:
For Whom?
- Students attending free DSH courses
- Students attending preparatory courses (Studienkolleg) at TUDIAS
- Applicants attending fee-based DSH courses at TUDIAS
Why?
- Insights into the contents and requirements of the desired degree programme
- Initial orientation for studying at TU Dresden
- Support for the transition from language course/preparatory course to studies
When?
- Starting mid-semester
- You can find the dates for your faculty at “current activities in this semester ”
How?
Central Opening Lecture by the International Office
- General information on studying at TU Dresden
- Possible degrees at TU Dresden
Formation of a tutorial group with all international applicants of a faculty. This group is led by at least one tutor, who studies at the same faculty as the participants.
In this Tutorial Group:
1st Tutorial
- Important abbreviations/terms
- Getting to know important information material from the International Office
- Information on TU Dresden’s most important information and counselling centres
2nd Tutorial
- Working through the information sheet of the Central Student Information and Counselling Services for the desired degree programme
- Information on the recognition of previous programme achievements and on changing the degree programme
- Steps after passing/failing the DSH exam/assessment test
- Practical insights into the degree programme
- Overview of the accompanying support offers for the next semester
Individual Counselling and Support from the Tutor
Tutors study at the same faculty as you. They are your contact person. Just ask – they will be happy to help. And if tutors cannot answer your question, they will tell you whom to ask (e.g. degree programme specific advisor, International Office).
Additional Materials
You can find additional services and downloadable materials offered by your faculty on Opal.
- Once you have found your faculty on Opal (listed on the left), you can:
- Attend events online via video conference (dates and links in the description)
- Use the forum to contact your tutors and other international students
- Access and download all documents and files used in the tutorials
- Contact your tutors via e-mail
For whom?
- Students in all semesters, who are enrolled in a German-and English taught degree programme (including ERASMUS students and other non-degree students)
- Particular focus: first-semester students at TU Dresden

How?
For all first-semester students at TU Dresden:
Students form a tutorial group with all international applicants of a faculty. This group is led by a team of tutors, who study at the same faculty as the participants:
1st Tutorial Study Oragnization/Welcome Meeting (including a joint campus and faculty tour) - in German and English
- Requirements for successful studying
- Important abbreviations/terms
- Overview of TU Dresden’s most important information material
- Language courses
- Sports programme
- Presentation of important contact persons
2nd Tutorial Study organization- in German and English
– For degree students only
Degree- students aim at acquiring a degree at TU Dresden:
- The academic year
- Types of courses
- Recognition of programme achievements (certificates)

Changing the degree programme

Working through the study regulations for the chosen degree programme
- Getting to know other study documents (e.g. exam regulations)
- Possible degrees
- Structure of the degree programme
- Planning the studies
- Explanations and help for putting together a course schedule
- For NON-degree students only (= exchange students, e.g., ERASMUS students)
Non-degree students are staying at TU Dresden for only one or two semesters and do not aim at acquiring a degree here in Dresden:

- Recognition of programme achievements/transcript of records
Library tour
- Participation in a central library tour (main library or departmental library)
- Followed by a special tour with the tutorial group
For all international students of the faculty:

Tutorial "Assessment and Examinations"
- Types and course of exams/tests

- Analysis of a mock exam
- What to do in the case of passing/failing an exam
- Tips for picking up certificates
- Working through the exam regulations
- Visit of the examination office

Tutors study at the same faculty as you. They are your contact person. Just ask – they will be happy to help. And if tutors cannot answer your question, they will tell you whom to ask (e.g. degree programme specific advisor, International Office).
Further Help from the Tutors
Depending on the faculty, the tutors might offer further support. Detailed information can be acquired directly from your tutor. Please contact him/her. Name and E-mail address can be found here .
Specific to each faculty, the tutors offer:
- Individual counselling/support during face-to-face meetings or via e-mail
- Meetings (tutorials) for imparting information that is relevant to the chosen degree program
- Information on important dates and events of the faculty, the International Office, and TU Dresden
- Further events, also in cooperation with other institutions (SLUB, Faculty Students’ Council, etc.)
