Information for students and applicants from abroad

Financing studies often plays a major role, especially for international students, and is thus an important factor when choosing a place to study.

When should I start looking for funding opportunities?

\ If it is not possible to finance your stay abroad on your own or with family support, then you should start looking for possible funding programs at least one year, but preferably one and a half years, before you start your studies in Germany. Most calls for full scholarships have at least a one-year lead time. The applications for the study program and for the scholarship therefore usually run in parallel, or you have to apply for a scholarship first.

When looking for possible funding options, the first port of call should always be the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It is the world's largest funding organization for the international exchange of students and academics and is represented in 58 countries. For advice and help on financing your study visit to Germany, contact the DAAD Information Center in your home country or visit the scholarship database.

For a guide to scholarship application and answers to frequently asked questions, see the DAAD's scholarship application instructions. If you are already in Germany, you can send your questions to the DAAD Info Center in Bonn via this contact form.
