• Position Overview: The Centre for infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore invites applications for multiple positions (post-doctoral fellows and project associates) for a project on developing implementable travel demand models for Bengaluru, India. Description: The project involves the development and implementation of traditional (four-step) and agent-based (activity-based) travel demand models, relevant data collection, and interfacing with a software development team and stakeholder agencies. Research topics to be explored include, for example, (a) synthetic population generation in data-poor settings, (b) evaluation of implementable strategies for household travel surveys, (c) enhancing the representation of travel by intermediate public transit, on-demand mobility, and non-motorized modes; (d) the evaluation of transit improvement strategies such as multimodal transit itineraries comprising private and public transit modes and transit priority lanes; and (e) the use of non-conventional data sources and emerging learning methods for travel demand estimation. A greater emphasis is placed on the development of implementable model systems and software tools for mobility demand analysis by city planning agencies. The project is funded by Bosch Limited. Eligibility: Ph.D. (or submitted Ph.D. thesis)/Master’s/Bachelor’s degree in any relevant domain, with a focus on one or more of the following topics: travel demand modeling, agent-based models, choice models, or household travel surveys and stated preference data collection. Skills expected

• Expertise in travel demand analysis, choice modeling, econometrics, agent-based modeling/simulation, and relevant data collection

• Strong programming skills (Python, C/C++, Java, databases, R)
• Experience with commonly used travel demand modeling packages (Cube, TransCAD, etc.)
• Excellent oral communication and technical writing skills
• Independent researchers who can lead project efforts and interact with external stakeholders

Work description

Technical: Guide survey administration; develop and implement algorithms for synthetic population generation; develop structures for the four-step and agent-based models and the simulation frameworks; implement the developed models and simulation frameworks into software; prepare project reports; prepare manuscripts for publication in scientific outlets. The applicants are welcome to carry out research on topics of their interest in the project. Managerial: ensure timely completion of project deliverables; guide a team of junior professionals; interact with public agencies for secondary data; guide external agencies for household travel survey administration; interface with the software team for the development of implementable software tools. Centre will offer (to selected candidates)

• One of the following positions: Post-doctoral Research Associate, Project Associate, Project Assistant, Project Scientist, JRF, or SRF (based on qualification and experience)
• Salary commensurate with qualification and experience, based on IISc norms
