Introduction
Peking University Library, established in 1898 and previously known as the Book Collection Building of the Imperial University of Peking, was the first national comprehensive university library in China. As the Book Collection Building, its value was “Study knowledge, increase wisdom”. In 1912, the Library changed into the present name. In 1918, Li Dazhao became the Chief Director of the Library, and started laying the foundation for modern librarianship in China. In the year of 1975, the large and well laid-out library building was completed in the center of the campus. And in 1998, the elegant new building was completed to join the old, setting out the construction of a world-class university library.

Over the past 125 years, the Library has relocated from Beijing to China's southwestern frontier and back. Throughout its journey, the Library has served as a sacred space for reading and intellectual enrichment, cultivated on the stretching land of academy and civilization, and evolved alongside generations of Peking University students and faculty. Its history is intrinsically linked with the nation's path and fate. In modern times, the Library ardently supports and embodies the country's ambitions for modern culture and education development and the Double First Class University construction. It unwaveringly adheres to the core philosophy of “Prioritizing Users and Services”, coupled with the foundational principle of “Nurturing Culture with Modesty”. The Library is committed to building a document center, educational platform, cultural shrine, and service oasis for the university community, and has already become a world-class university library with comprehensiveness, innovation, intelligence and leadership.

Peking University Library is now composed of the main library, the Medical Library and faculty branches. With more than 400 librarians provide services, the Library spans over 100,000 square meters, and collects over 10 million pieces of printed documents and over 3PB data storage. The main library operates 112 hours each week and open more than 350 days annually, while also providing online services throughout the day. The Library has also been recognized by the State Council as one of the first batch of National Major Institutions for Ancient Books Preservation, collects 1.6 million pieces of Chinese ancient books.

The Library's affiliated departments include the Secretariat of the Steering Committee for Academic Libraries of China under the Ministry of Education and the Secretariat of the Academic Library Society under the Library Society of China. It is in charge of operating the two national project platforms, China Academic Library and Information System (CALIS) and China Academic Social Sciences and Humanities Library (CASHL). The Library also plays an important role in international communication and cooperation, as being a member of IARU library branch, IFLA and other international organizations.

Peking University Library has been ardently supported by Party and state leaders, the university and society. Library Director
Chen Jianlong
Chen Jianlong is the Library Director and Party Committee member, and is in charge of managing the library’s operations. Chen’s other roles include Director of the Ministry of Education and Information Intelligence Guidance Committee, Vice Chairman of the Library Society of China, Deputy Director of the Library Society of China (University Division), Board Member of the National Library of China, Deputy Director of the China Academic Library & Information System (CALIS) Management Center, Deputy Director of the China Academic Social Sciences and Humanities Library (CASHL) Guidance Committee, Director of the CASHL Management Center, and Chairman of the Digital Resource Acquisition Alliance of Chinese Academic Libraries (DRAA) Board. He is responsible for general management, reform and innovation matters and is also a liaison for the Humanities Division of the Library.
Party Secretary
Zheng Qingwen
Zheng Qingwen is the Party Secretary and a Party Committee member, and is responsible for the work of the Party Committee. Zheng is also the Team Leader of the Library Building Construction Leadership Team, Vice Chairman of the China Social Sciences Intelligence Society, and Library Director of the King Abdulaziz Public Library (Peking University Branch). She is responsible for organizing and planning tasks, overseeing party building, ensuring safety and stability, managing library construction, facilitating comprehensive personnel and librarian development, and handling retirement matters. Zheng is in charge of the Personnel and Librarian Development Office, and serves as a liaison for the Social Sciences Division of the Library.
Deputy Library Director
Bie Liqian
Bie Liqian is the Deputy Library Director, Party Committee member, and a Board member of the Digital Resource Acquisition Alliance of Chinese Academic Libraries (DRAA). Bie is responsible for digital and knowledge resource services and branch management. He is in charge of the Knowledge Resource Service Center, Literature Resource Service Center, Ancient Literature Resource Service Center, Special Collection Resource Service Center, Branch Management Office and serves as the liaison for the Science Division of the Library.
Liu Suqing
Liu Suqing is the Deputy Library Director, Party Committee member, Deputy Director of the Academic Committee of the Library Society of China, and Team Leader of the Reform and Innovation Leadership Team. Liu manages administrative, research, finance operations, logistics and security, donation and partnership and co-manages general administration. Liu is responsible for the Logistics and Security Office, General Administration Office, Donations and Partnerships Office, Research Management Office, and serves as the liaison for the Medical Division of the Library.
Tong Yunhai
Tong Yunhai is the Deputy Library Director and Party Committee member. Tong is responsible for data, collaborative, computing, research and development services, and the construction of an integrated digital library. Tong is also in charge of the Data Service Center, Collaborative Service Center, Computing Service Center, Research and Development Service Center, and serves as the liaison for the Information and Engineering Division of the Library.
Yao Xiaoxia
Yao Xiaoxia is the Deputy Library Director, Party Committee member, Deputy Director of the China Academic Library & Information System (CALIS) Management Center, Deputy Director of the China Academic Social Sciences and Humanities Library (CASHL) Management Center, Vice Chairman of the Digital Resource Acquisition Alliance of Chinese Academic Libraries (DRAA) Board. Yao manages major projects like CALIS, CASHL and is in charge of the Project Management Center, while serving as the liaison for the Economics and Management Division of the Library.

Zhou Chunxia is the Deputy Party Secretary, Party Member, Union Chairman and Team Leader of the Multimedia Communication Leadership Team. Zhou is responsible for daily party affairs, publicity, disciplinary and supervisory oversight, union matters, customer relations, and retirement operations. She is in charge of the Customer Relations Office and serves as the liaison for the Interdisciplinary Division of the Library.
