Seminar Room

In order to support the academic discussion, learning communication and other activities for teachers and students of Peking University, and meet the needs of users for independent discussion space, the library has specially opened several rooms separated from the reading area, and also launched the seminar room space services. At present, four seminar rooms 202, 203, 204 and 205 on the second floor of the west building have been opened, equipped with LCD TV, glass whiteboard, tables and chairs, etc. Welcome to visit kjyy.lib.pku.edu.cn and make an appointment.

Seats for Research and Study

In order to provide readers with better learning environment and fulfill diversified demands, PKU library has opened room 218, 313 and 414 in west building to provide research and studies seat service. The seats are equipped with lock bookcase, desktop sockets, desktop lighting, wireless network and other facilities. During the library opening hours, readers can log in to kjyy.lib.pku.edu.cn from 9pm to 12pm to select seats (please use campus network while using mobile device).

Reservation of Seats for Reading Ancient Books

(I)The Rare Books Reading Room

The Rare Books Reading Room locates on the east side of the first floor of Rare Books Branch of Peking University Library, provides reading services of ancient documents, microfilm, CD electronic documents, and photocopy series of ancient books.

The reading room occupies 305 square meters of space and is ornamented by Chinese-style interior design with simple yet elegant furniture. There are forty-five seats for readers, and eight computers set for digital documents reading, two computers for library collection retrieval, and four microfilm reading machines.

The reading room displays all kinds of photocopied books, including local chronicles, photocopied publications of ancient books, reference books, etc. In addition, there are roughly 40,000 copies of large-set ancient document photocopies carefully preserved in the compact stacks on the B1 level. Readers can submit filled call slips to the librarian who will help retrieve the documents to the reading room for studying.

(II) Chinese Rare Books Library

  1. Service Time

The Rare Books Reading Room locates on the east side of the first floor of Rare Books Branch of Peking University Library.

Mon-Fri 8:00-11:30 13:00-17:00

Note: The stack rooms for ancient books will be closed ahead of time to ensure security, so the application should be submitted during the follow time:

Mon-Fri 8:00-11:00 13:00-16:30

(The service time changes during vacations and holidays. Please pay attention to the notice on the homepage.)

Service Time in Summer

Because of the wet weather in summer, services for rare books will be suspended from Jun.15 to Sep.15 every year. Thanks a lot for your understanding.

Note: The ancient documents refer to the books and rubbings which are preserved in the rare-book stacks (usually the call numbers of rare books begin with NC, SB, LSB, LX, MSB, MX or JSB ), as well as other books and maps published before 1795.

  1. Notes for Seat Reservation

1)Please make an appointment before arriving at the library. The reserved seats will be reserved for one hour, and will be automatically cancelled if the reservation is exceeded.

2) Please cancel your appointment in time if you can't come to the library for any reason.

3) Please sign in at the information desk in Rare Books reading room with your campus card when you have successfully made an appointment.

  1. Service for Faculty, Staff and Students on Campus

There are "mail appointment" and "on-site application" for thread bound ancient books; Some rubbings which have been digitized can be viewed on computer in the reading room, but rubbings without digital image need to be applied through email before you come to library.

a) Please send the completed application(Download :Appointment application form) to the email (lib.pku.edu.cn" rel="nofollow">gujiyuelanlib.pku.edu.cn(link sends e-mail)) at least 2 working days ahead of schedule. After receiving the reply, you can come to the library according to the acknowledged time.

b) You can apply for no more than 3 titles of thread bound ancient books for each appointment, and you can continue to apply in the reading room.

  1. Service for Visitors

1) First and foremost, Chinese Rare Books Library serves current faculty, students, staff, and researchers who hold valid Peking University IDs. However, the library also welcomes people with special research needs.

2) Since September 2018, there have been a Rare Books Reservation Service for visitors:

a) Please send the completed  application(Download :Appointment application form)to the email (lib.pku.edu.cn" rel="nofollow">gujiyuelanlib.pku.edu.cn) at least 10 working days ahead of schedule. After receiving the reply, you can come to the library according to the acknowledged time.

b) The reservation will be kept for another day when it is due. It is required to reapply if you don't come within the specified time.

3) Visitors need to present an official letter of introduction with the name and an official stamp on the letter. Usually the letter is valid for one month. A photo identification is also needed.

4) Usually, each visitor can ask for up to three titles of ancient documents including compact disc, films, rubbing and maps within one single day.

  1. Notes for Reading in Rare Books Reading Room

1) A valid ID is required for anyone to enter the room.

2) All the bags and water cups or drinks should be deposited in the lockers.

3) Please inform the librarian if you need to take your own books into the room.

4) Please fill out the call slip which is required for each rare book and some ordinary books placed in closed shelf stacks.

5) In order to effectively protect the ancient books, documents in the following conditions will not be provided in their original edition:

a) The ancient edition of the Song and Yuan dynasties, Dunhuang manuscripts;

b) Books which have been selected into the list of National Precious Ancient Books;

c) Books which have Films or Compact disc copies;

d) Books which have been photocopied and published;

e) Books which are in severely damaged condition;

f) Books with many notes, or original letters.

g) Books which are in process of Digitizing Project.

6) Please take good care of the ancient books and keep your hands clean while reading. The reading stand on the desk is for you to use. Be careful while flip the pages. It is not allowed to scribble on the books. If you need to transcribe the books, please use the pencil. Pens, mark pens and ball-point pens are not allowed because of the ink.

7) Rare books can only be read in designated areas. During reading, it is not allowed to take rare books away from the seat, or exchange rare books with other readers; If you need to leave the reading room temporarily, you must return the rare books to the librarian first.

8) Thread-bound books, rubbings (including rubbings scanning images), films and CD documents are not allowed to be photographed, scanned or copied without permission. If there is a need for duplication for research purposes, you should apply to the librarian first, and then go through the relevant procedures.

9) The ordinary books (i.e. Photocopy Series of Ancient Books and various reference books) can be photographed after informing the librarian.

10) Please keep quiet in reading room, and make sure your mobile phones and beepers are switched off or switched to the silent mode.

Media Service Hall Reservation

With the purpose of providing a space for teachers and students to make sounds in the quiet library and enrich the cultural life of students, the library has newly built a multi-functional room called " Media Service Hall " on the lower ground of South Side Hall, which will be opened to readers for free utilization. Readers are allowed to read aloud, sing, listen to music, practice PowerPoint, or conduct group discussions in the room. Moreover, the space offers professional projection and audio equipment, so that students are able to watch high-definition and 3D movies here, meeting the requirements for high-quality sound and visuals. Detailed rules and regulations for making an appointment for the space are currently being formulated.
