โบสถ์ หอสวด และหอบัพติศมา ถือเป็นสถาปัตยกรรมประเภทหนึ่งที่มีเอกลักษณ์ และความน่าสนใจ ในบรรดาสถาปัตยกรรมที่สร้างขึ้นในคริสต์ศาสนา แม้จะไม่ได้มีขนาดที่ใหญ่โตเมื่อเทียบกับอาคารอย่างอาสนวิหาร (Cathedral) แต่ก็มีความเฉพาะตัวในเชิงการใช้สอย อันนำไปสู่รูปทรง และที่ว่างที่สะท้อนถึงโครงสร้าง และเทคนิคการก่อสร้าง การศึกษาครั้งนี้ ประกอบด้วยอาคารกรณีศึกษาทั้งหมด 11 หลัง จากภูมิภาคยุโรปตะวันตก ได้แก่ สาธารณรัฐอิตาลี และสาธารณรัฐฝรั่งเศส ซึ่งได้รับการยอมรับว่าเป็นสถาปัตยกรรมอันเป็นตัวแทนแห่งยุคสมัยต่าง ๆ ในประวัติศาสตร์สถาปัตยกรรม ตั้งแต่ช่วงคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 2 – 17 และถือเป็นแบบอย่างของงานออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมของโลกตะวันตก
องค์ประกอบพื้นฐานของสถาปัตยกรรม เริ่มจากผังพื้น ได้แก่ ระบบผังแบบเน้นศูนย์กลาง (Centralized Plan) และระบบผังแบบทางยาว (Longitudinal Plan) ซึ่งได้รับแนวทางมาจากสถาปัตยกรรมโรมัน นำมาปรับเปลี่ยนการใช้สอยให้เหมาะสมกับพิธีกรรมทางศาสนา ปัจจัยของที่ตั้ง และวิทยาการของโครงสร้าง และการก่อสร้าง อาคารแสดงออกถึงอัตลักษณ์เฉพาะของสถาปัตยกรรมในแต่ละยุคสมัย เช่น การประยุกต์ใช้โค้งกลม (Round Arch) ในสถาปัตยกรรมแบบไบแซนไทน์ (Byzantine) และโรมาเนสก์ (Romanesque) การใช้โค้งแหลม (Pointed Arch) และยอดแหลม (Spires) ในการประดับสถาปัตยกรรมแบบกอธิก (Gothic) การใช้แบบแผนสถาปัตยกรรมคลาสสิก และมิติสัมพันธ์ของสัดส่วนรูปทรงในสถาปัตยกรรมสมัยฟื้นฟูศิลปวิทยาการ (Renaissance) การตกแต่ง และบิดเบือนรูปทรงในสถาปัตยกรรมแบบบาโรค (Baroque) ลักษณะเหล่านี้ สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงแนวความคิด และรสนิยมซึ่งเป็นจิตวิญญาณแห่งยุคสมัย ผ่านสื่อแทนคืองานออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรม
