การศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์สถาปัตยกรรมถือเป็นรากฐานที่สำคัญของวิชาสถาปัตยกรรม เนื่องจากเป็นการศึกษาที่มาที่ไปของสถาปัตยกรรมในแง่มุมต่าง ๆ สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความสอดคล้อง และอิทธิพลขององค์ความรู้ต่าง ๆ ที่หล่อหลอมให้เกิดสถาปัตยกรรมนั้น ๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นด้านการเมืองการปกครอง เศรษฐกิจ สังคม วัฒนธรรม ศาสนา และความเชื่อ ไปจนถึงภูมิศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์ และ เทคโนโลยี อันสะท้อนถึงวิทยาการของมนุษย์ ทั้งในช่วงเวลา และ ภูมิภาคที่แตกต่างกัน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง การศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์สถาปัตยกรรมในโลกตะวันตก ถือเป็นการศึกษาในกระแสหลักที่จะทำให้เข้าใจโลกของสถาปัตยกรรมสมัยใหม่ และ สถาปัตยกรรมร่วมสมัย
การศึกษามหาวิหารสำคัญในโลกตะวันตก เป็นการศึกษาการเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปแบบทางสถาปัตยกรรมของมหาวิหาร อันเป็นตัวแทนของสถาปัตยกรรมที่เป็นตัวแทนในแต่ละยุคสมัย และ ภูมิภาคต่าง ๆ ของทวีปยุโรป ทั้งในแง่มุมของประวัติศาสตร์ ภูมิศาสตร์ แนวความคิด รูปแบบสถาปัตยกรรม เทคโนโลยีการก่อสร้าง และ คติความเชื่อ อันเป็นปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมมหาวิหารแต่ละหลัง โดยศึกษาผ่านการทำรายงานการศึกษาค้นคว้า การเขียนแบบทางสถาปัตยกรรม และ การทำหุ่นจำลองสามมิติ โดยนิสิตภาควิชาสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ ชั้นปีที่ 2 ปีการศึกษา 2562 ภาควิชาสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ คณะสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย
The study of History of Architecture is the crucial basis of an architectural studying, as it is the studying about lore and science of an architecture which represents relationships and knowledge influences that shape it, whether politic, economy, society, culture, religion, and belief alongside with geography, science and technology especially a study of architectural history in the western world, as it is the mainstream of architectural study to get a better understanding of both modern architecture and contemporary architecture.
The study of Basilicas in the western world is a study regarding the transition of Basilicas architectural style, which is a representative of particular periods and regions in Europe in the aspects of history, geography, concept, architectural style, construction technology, and belief. These are the factors that affect architectural designing of each basilica through reporting, researching, architectural drawing and 3-Dimensional model making by 2nd year students of 2019 class, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Architecture Chulalongkorn University.
