Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the eligibility for student exchange programs?
An undergraduate student who has completed 200 credits of course work and has a CPI of at least 7.0 can apply for a semester exchange program. Postgraduate students who have spent at least two semesters and have a CPI of at least 8.0 are eligible.
- How can students apply for semester exchange programs?
The Office of International Relations (OIR) will invite applications from students for specific semester exchange programs. Interested students will need to send their latest official transcript along with their CV to OIR.
- What is the procedure for getting approval for semester exchange once the student has been nominated for a program?
For UG students: The student shall make an application to SUGC through the concerned DUGC, giving details of the proposed programme and shall submit a statement of purpose with sufficient information about the institution where he/she has chosen to spend time as a non-degree student.\ The DUGC shall examine the student's proposal to determine whether the proposed programme is of a nature that the student will benefit from the exposure. Any application for waiver of credits at IIT Kanpur or transfer of credits from the other institution shall be decided in accordance with the procedure given below. On the recommendation of the DUGC, SUGC may approve the proposal and grant permission, with leave of absence, to the student to proceed as a non-degree student to the selected institution.
For PG students: For permission to spend time as a non-degree student elsewhere, an eligible student will make an application to the SPGC through the DPGC, duly supported by a statement of purpose to undertake the proposed work and sufficient information about the department/institution.The DPGC will consider the student's application and will determine if the proposed programme of work is of such a nature that waiver for at least 7 units per regular semester or 4 units per summer term is possible.\ The SPGC may approve the application on the recommendation of the DPGC. In all such cases, the student will be informed about the requirements he/she must fulfill to apply for academic credit on his/her return.
- What is the process for getting the credits transferred?
For UG students: Permission to proceed to another institution as a non-degree student does not imply that the student will automatically get waiver from the academic and other requirements of his/her ongoing undergraduate programme at the Institute. However, on return, he/she may apply for waiver with an official transcript of the grades obtained by him/her at the selected institution as a non-degree student and other documents/material that the concerned DUGC may require for evaluation. \ The DUGC will determine, by whatever means it deems fit, the equivalent courses (credits) and/or requirements for which the student may be given a waiver in his/her undergraduate programme at the Institute. On the recommendation of the DUGC, SUGC may allow a student waiver for a maximum of 100 credits in-lieu of his/her successful completion of the programme elsewhere as a non-degree student. Against each course or requirement for which a waiver is granted, the grade 'W' would appear on the Grade Report with an explanatory note that it stands for waiver granted due to courses taken and/or work done at the elected institution elsewhere. All such courses and/or requirements will be deemed to carry zero credits for SPI/CPI calculations.
For PG students: Permission to proceed to an institution as a non-degree student does not imply that the student will automatically get any waiver from the academic requirements of IIT Kanpur. The student after completion of the work, will apply for waiver from requirements of his/her programme at IIT Kanpur supported by an official transcript of the grades obtained and whatever material the DPGC may require for the purpose given in para (vii) below. \ The concerned DPGC will evaluate the work done by the student and will make recommendations to the SPGC after determining by whatever means it deems fit, the equivalent IIT Kanpur courses/requirements for which the student may be given a waiver. On the recommendation of the DPGC, the SPGC may allow the waiver for a maximum of 16 units. Against each requirement for which a waiver is granted, a W would appear on the transcript with an explanatory note that W stands for waiver for work done at the Institution concerned. All such requirements will be deemed to carry zero weight for SPI/CPI calculations.
