About Ela

I’m Ela, an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering student from Türkiye. I chose to study at Newcastle University because of its emphasis on real-world learning through research opportunities and strong links with industry.

As part of the Russell Group, it offers a research-intensive environment that really appealed to me. I was particularly drawn to the investment in the Stephenson Building, with its modern labs, advanced simulation software, and opportunities for hands-on experience with the latest engineering tools.

Beyond academics, Newcastle University stood out for its welcoming atmosphere, with hundreds of clubs and societies, and its excellent graduate employability record, with many students going on to work in leading engineering companies or further study.

Real-world applications

For me, mechanical engineering is a very balanced discipline. It combines theoretical knowledge and practical learning. It lays the foundation for careers across multiple fields. Annual projects have been a highlight, showing how what we learn translates directly into real-world applications.

The course helped me build teamwork, time management, and critical thinking skills while working on real engineering projects.

Discovering Newcastle

So much of Newcastle is within walking distance, and it’s affordable too. You can have fun while continuing your academic career without spending too much. I also love how close it is to the Northeast coast and countryside; you can get to so many places easily by train, and there’s so much to explore without needing to spend a lot.

Outside my studies, I have been President of the Turkish Society which has been a meaningful way to share my culture and connect with others. I also joined the Archery Club, something I’d wanted to try since high school, and it has been a wonderful way to meet new people who share my interests.

Newcastle is a very lively and friendly city. It has a great balance of vibrant student life and peaceful spots to enjoy your weekends.

Support that makes a difference

As an international student, receiving the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship has helped me a lot, easing financial pressures and it also made it easier to adapt to living abroad. It allowed me to budget more effectively and fully embrace university life making the most of the opportunities available.

I’ve also benefitted from my personal tutor’s guidance, both academically and in making me aware of different opportunities offered by the University. The Wellbeing Service has been great too, particularly during exams, offering creative activities that helped me manage stress.

Find out about our Careers Service

Through Careers Service networking events, volunteering, job fairs, and ‘Creative Thinking and Innovation’ workshops, I’m developing my creative thinking alongside my technical engineering skills.
