## Overview
The Cardiovascular Science in Health and Disease MRes is for graduates with a BSc in the life sciences or other science disciplines. It is also open to intercalating and qualified MBBS or BDS students. You can take this as a stand-alone qualification or as an entry route onto a PhD or MD.
You'll develop your own bespoke course with our broad range of taught modules. You'll then begin a 24-week research project in cardiovascular science in health and disease research.

## What you'll learn
You'll study subject-specific content in cardiovascular science in health and disease research, taught by both scientists and clinicians.
You’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of cardiovascular health and disease across the life course from development of the embryo to adulthood. Key topics covered include cardiac development, physiology, ageing and disease and the link to genetics and cellular contributions, The module will cover experimental and clinical approaches to research this exciting evolving area.
You'll add to these modules from a broad range of complementary options.
Your 24-week research project comprises the major element of the course. You'll receive supervision from an expert academic researcher in cardiovascular science research.

MRes Research Project
You'll choose from projects that relate to your MRes title. Proposals of projects are from academic supervisors within the University.
The 24-week research project will begin in your second semester.
You'll complete guided but independent original research. You'll develop skills in:
- planning
- executing
- recording research
- data interpretation and analysis
You'll complete a written dissertation, lay abstract, oral presentation and poster. The project dissertation and poster will be marked internally and by an expert from another Institution.
Previous projects from the MRes suite include:

At the end of each academic year, we hold an MRes poster presentation evening. You'll showcase your research to your peers and the extended academic community.

Depending on your residency history, if you’re a student from the EU, other EEA or a Swiss national, with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you’ll normally pay the ‘Home’ tuition fee rate and may be eligible for Student Finance England support.

## Entry requirements
The entrance requirements below apply to 2026 entry.
### Academic entry requirements
A minimum of a 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent, in:
- a life science or related discipline
- or an MBBS/BDS degree
This programme accepts both medical and dental students wishing to take a master's degree as an intercalation. You will need to have successfully completed your third or fourth year of study.
Practical laboratory work experience is desirable, although not essential. The modules you can study may depend on your academic background.

### Before you start
**Start Dates**
The course starts in September.
**Closing Dates**
We suggest international students apply at least two months before the course starts. This is so that you have enough time to make the necessary arrangements.
**Specialised application information**
**Research proposal**
You are NOT required to submit a research project proposal for MRes programmes in the Faculty of Medical Sciences as part of your online application.
**Deposit**
**All International students**
If you are an international student or a student from the EU, EEA or Switzerland and you need a visa to study in the UK, you must pay a deposit or submit an official letter of sponsorship. The deposit is payable after you receive an offer to study with us. This deposit is non-refundable and will be deducted from your tuition fees when you register. You may also be subject to academic and English language qualification verification, confirmation of funds and credibility interviews.
**International students who received an offer before 18 March 2026**
- You are required to pay a £1,500 deposit or submit an official letter of sponsorship.
**International students Bangladesh, Ghana, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan who received an offer after 18 March 2026**
- You are required to pay a deposit of £5,000 or submit an official letter of sponsorship by 01 August 2026.
**All International students (excluding those from the markets above) who received an offer after 18 March 2026**
- You are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship by 01 August 2026.
**ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme)**
You may need an [ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme)](https://www.ncl.ac.uk/study/atas/) clearance certificate. You'll need to get this before you can get your visa or study on this programme. We'll let you know about the ATAS requirement in your offer letter.
