Charles Letts Memorial Scholarship

Provided by: The Charles Letts Memorial Fund Committee, in memory of Charles Letts.  

Number of awards available:

Scholarship amount: £6,000 total - £2,000 per year will be paid for your first 3 years of study 

Eligibility criteria: 

To be eligible for this award, you must be:

  1. A UK based Undergraduate student, entering stage 1 of study
  2. Entering Newcastle University via the PARTNERS Programme
  3. Registered on a course in a STEMM subject:
  4. Science
  5. Technology
  6. Engineering
  7. Mathematics
  8. Medicine

Chemistry - James Skillington Memorial Scholarship

Provided by: Newcastle University Development Trust with funds donated by the family of James Skillington, to honour his memory after he died from Leukaemia whilst studying Chemistry at Newcastle University. 

Number of awards available:

Scholarship amount: £3,000 total - £1,000 will be paid per year for three years of study  

Eligibility criteria:

  1. A UK based Undergraduate student, entering stage 1 of study
  2. A Widening Participation (WP) student - the University classes students as WP if they have been in receipt of Free School Meals and/or are estranged and/or are care experienced

Eligibility Criteria: 

To be eligible for this award, you must be:

  4. Studying a degree programme where female students are underrepresented

Humanities and Social Sciences

Architecture, Planning and Landscape - Building Futures

The School of Architecture, Planning & Landscape is able to offer one Building Futures Scholarship award for a young home fees paying person of diverse ethnic heritage to study architecture commencing in September 2026. The student on the scheme will have their home fees waived for their three-year undergraduate study and receive financial support towards living costs each year. The University encourages recipients of the award to engage with our partner charity, Blueprint for All and their Building Futures Programme, which supports young people of diverse ethnic heritage to enter the architectural and built environment industry.

To be eligible for the Scholarship, students should apply to study architecture (K100) at Newcastle following the usual UCAS process.

Following receipt of an offer to study architecture at Newcastle University, students should complete this application form by midday Friday 22nd May 2026. Student must be willing to have Newcastle as their Firm choice to be considered for this award.

History - Mary Spencer Bursary

Provided by: This bursary is in loving memory of a dear mother, grandmother, and History graduate from King’s College Durham (now Newcastle University). Mary Spencer was a dedicated, creative teacher of many subjects, including history, for almost fifty years. 

Number of awards available:

Scholarship amount: £1,500 for one year of study only.  

Eligibility criteria: 

  1. A UK based Undergraduate student, entering stage 3 of study
  2. Registered on the BA (Hons) History course
  3. Have achieved an overall mark of 65 or over in your second year of study
  4. Have been in part-time employment during term time for the equivalent of one full semester (12 weeks) of your degree programme so far

Medicine - Hindhaugh Bursary

Provided by: Mr Adrian Allan, who sadly passed away in 2023. This bursary has been generously donated to honour members of the Hindhaugh family who studied for their medical degrees at the University. Recognising that the Hindhaugh family were both in business and in medicine associated with Newcastle upon Tyne.  

Number of awards available:

Scholarship amount: £2,000 for one year of study only 

Eligibility criteria: 

  1. A UK based Undergraduate student, entering stage 5 of study
  2. A Widening Participation (WP) student or having entered Newcastle via the PARTNERS Programme or an assisted entry route
  3. Be from the North East of England
  4. Registered on the MB BS Medicine and Surgery course
  5. Be receiving your full student funding to which you are entitled and be able to provide evidence of this.

Medicine - Troy-Green Memorial Bursary

Provided by: the family of Dr Marian Tuszewski Troy and in remembrance of R. B. Green who supported Dr Troy to enter Newcastle Medical School at the end of WW2.  

Number of awards available:

Scholarship amount: £1,000 for one year of study only 

Eligibility criteria: 

To be eligible for this award, you must be:

  1. A UK based Undergraduate student, entering stage 1 of study
  2. Registered on the MB BS Medicine and Surgery course

Preference will be given to students with a Polish or Eastern European heritage.

Dental Surgery - Connor King Foundation Dental Scholarship

Provided by: The Connor King Foundation. The scholarship was established in memory of Connor King, who tragically passed away while in Stage 3 of his Dental Surgery BDS degree at Newcastle’s School of Dental Sciences. He was a very enthusiastic young man, with a kind heart and passion for helping those less fortunate than himself. 

Number of awards available:

Scholarship amount: £5,000 total - £1,000 will be paid per year for five years of study  

Eligibility criteria: 

To be eligible for this award, you must be:

  1. A UK based Undergraduate student, entering stage 1 of study
  2. A Widening Participation (WP) student - the University classes students as WP if they have been in receipt of Free School Meals and/or are estranged and/or are care experienced
  3. Be from the North East of England
  4. Registered on the BDS Dental Surgery course

How to apply: No application is necessary. The successful candidate will be contacted by email by the end of the Autumn term.

Dental Surgery - Jimmy Steele Scholarship

Provided by: Alumni and friends of Newcastle University, in memory of Emeritus Professor Jimmy Steele CBE. He was a much loved Head of School and Professor and if he was still alive, students would have had a taste of his distinctive and entertaining teaching style. Since his death from a brain tumour in 2017, Newcastle University along with Jimmy’s family and friends have been raising money to help students who might have financial stress in accessing a degree. The hope is that the support will go a little way to smoothing a pathway to becoming a great dentist!

Scholarship amount: £4,000 total - £1,000 will be paid per year for the first four years of study  

Eligibility criteria: 

To be eligible for this award, you must be:

  1. A UK based Undergraduate student, entering stage 1 of study

Provided by: Patch Fund at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. The award is from a generous anonymous benefactor to assist students with their Dental studies

Eligibility criteria: 

To be eligible for this award, you must be:

  1. A UK based Undergraduate student, entering stage 1 of study
  2. A Widening Participation (WP) student - the University classes students as WP if they have been in receipt of Free School Meals and/or are estranged and/or are care experienced
  3. Registered on the BDS Dental Surgery course
  4. Have been a resident in the North East for five years or more. Postcodes include those beginning: NE, SR, DH, DL, TD, TS

Provided by: The estate of Alan Worsley. The purpose of the prize is to help enable an international exchange for a student to a partner university or allow for a period of research study in Newcastle University with colleagues in the School of Pharmacy.

To be eligible for this award, you must be:

  1. A UK based Undergraduate student, in stages 1, 2 or 3
  2. A Widening Participation (WP) student
  3. Registered on the MPharm Pharmacy course

The purpose of the prize is to help enable an international exchange for a student to a partner university or allow for a period of research study in Newcastle University with colleagues in the School of Pharmacy.
