About Madiha
I’m Madiha, an undergraduate student from India. I wanted to study in the UK because of the quality of education and the excellent reputation of the universities. I was also eager to study abroad to become more independent and develop life skills which would benefit me in the future.
I chose Newcastle University because of its academic reputation and rankings, especially in the humanities. The course also offered modules in my areas of interest which weren’t available at other universities I had applied to. I was awarded a Vice Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship, so I made the university my firm choice.

The application process was straightforward and I felt very supported by the University throughout. I received regular emails letting me know what I needed to do next.
As an international student, I received support from the Visa Support Team when I needed to change my BRP to an eVisa. They made sure the process was smooth and stress-free.
There is a warmth to Newcastle that I have come to love. I have found everything I need to be very accessible by foot, but public transport is efficient too. The campus itself is beautiful, with a mix of historic and modern buildings and lots of green spaces. The academic environment is supportive and inclusive, but also innovative and stimulating.
Critical analysis and creative expression
Studying literature, you explore so many topics: politics, history, anthropology, ecology, art and even science and technology. I like how this side of my studies helps me become broad-minded and the creative writing modules allow me to implement that in my own writing.
The diversity of the course has allowed me to explore various literary periods, styles and forms. Through the writing workshops and literature seminars, I've gained skills in critical analysis and creative expression, which have helped me develop my storytelling.
Skills for my studies and future career
When I needed help with an assignment and advice on time management, I asked the Academic Skills Service for support. I had a great session with an advisor who helped me overcome the challenges I was facing and showed me other resources.
The skills you develop by studying English literature open lots of opportunities. After I graduate, I want to continue my studies with a postgraduate course in creative writing. I plan to pursue a career in teaching and be an author on the side.
