## How you'll learn

[Delivery and teaching methods](#)

You will be required to complete a total of 180 credits throughout the course. Taught modules worth 110 credits are delivered in semesters 1 and 2. A 70 credit individual research dissertation project is undertaken in the third semester. You'll be taught through a combination of:

- lectures
- tutorials
- practical classes
- online materials
- coursework tasks with individual feedback
- site visits and field trips

You'll study a mix of taught modules and get hands-on experience through an environmental engineering design challenge, followed by an individual research dissertation.

Many modules include extensive lab work, taught in small groups with expert guidance and live demonstrations.

Throughout your studies, you’ll have regular access to academic staff. This can be through small-groups, in-person sessions or flexible online meetings.

**Project design work**

In the 20 credit Environmental Design module in semester 2, you'll work closely with academic mentors to develop sustainable solutions to protect the environment and public health.

**Group work**

In the Environmental Engineering for Low- and Middle-income Countries module and the Environmental Engineering Design module, you'll work in small teams to find appropriate environmental engineering solutions appropriate to low- and middle-income countries.

**Field trips**

Field trips will include guided visits to water and wastewater treatment plants, solid waste management facilities, and contaminated land sites in North East England. You will have access to Newcastle University’s [Urban Observatory](https://urbanobservatory.ac.uk/), which provides the UK’s largest set of publicly available real time urban data in the UK, and the UK’s [National Green Infrastructure Facility](https://www.ukcric.com/facilities/national-green-infrastructure-facility/).

**Dissertation**

You'll put your specialist skills, knowledge, and understanding into practice undertaking a significant individual research project and written dissertation.

Your project might involve you working within one of the School's world-class research groups. We have well-equipped laboratories and pilot-scale research facilities.

Or you might work elsewhere in collaboration with another academic or industrial partner where we have strong links. Overseas field research may also be possible.

Wherever you work, you will be supervised, throughout your project, by an experienced scientist or engineer. They will also support you on your collection/analysis of data, and will guide you in producing a well-written dissertation.

As a general principle, you should expect the tuition fee to increase in each subsequent academic year of your course, subject to government regulations on fee increases and in line with inflation.

[EU, other EEA and Swiss nationals - tuition fee status](#) 

Depending on your residency history, if you’re a student from the EU, other EEA or a Swiss national, with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you’ll normally pay the ‘Home’ tuition fee rate and may be eligible for Student Finance England support.

EU students without settled or pre-settled status will normally be charged fees at the ‘International’ rate and will not be eligible for Student Finance England support. **You may be eligible for a scholarship worth 25% off the international fee**. **All International students**

If you are an international student or a student from the EU, EEA or Switzerland and you need a visa to study in the UK, you must pay a deposit or submit an official letter of sponsorship. The deposit is payable after you receive an offer to study with us. This deposit is non-refundable and will be deducted from your tuition fees when you register. You may also be subject to academic and English language qualification verification, confirmation of funds and credibility interviews.

**International students who received an offer before 18 March 2026**

- You are required to pay a £1,500 deposit or submit an official letter of sponsorship.

**International students Bangladesh, Ghana, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan who received an offer after 18 March 2026**

- You are required to pay a deposit of £5,000 or submit an official letter of sponsorship by 01 August 2026.

**All International students (excluding those from the markets above) who received an offer after 18 March 2026**
