## Overview

The Ecology MRes is for graduates in the field of environmental, ecological and related sciences. You'll gain the skills required to follow successful careers in the environmental, sustainable development and wildlife conservation sectors. You'll also develop the advanced skills and knowledge required for further academic study, or research-focused industry roles. By studying our Ecology MRes you can help support the protection of our planet.

The degree is for anyone who wants to develop the skills needed to implement sustainable solutions to global climate and biodiversity challenges.

Your 120 credits research dissertation project forms the main component of your training. We can adapt your ideas or you can choose from projects offered by labs across SNES and by industry and NGO partners (including IUCN and RSPB). The topics are diverse and can include pressing challenges in:

- ecology and wildlife management
- environmental sciences,
- food security and agriculture
- environmental management
- landscape management
- conservation & policy

## What you'll learn

The Ecology MRes will enable you to develop:

- advanced knowledge of ecology and wildlife conservation science
- an in-depth understanding of the principles of biodiversity and its co-dependencies with climate and land use changes
- practical skills in ecological and environmental data collection, data handling, data analysis, and advanced modelling methodologies
- skills in wildlife and environmental monitoring, surveying, and GIS and Remote Sensing
- critical thinking to address UK and global ecology and conservation problems

The Ecology MRes is delivered by a range of:

- a research dissertation project on a topic of your choice, in collaboration with an academic supervisor

You'll take a range of optional taught modules. These provide a solid foundation in both quantitative and qualitative skills. These skills are essential in modern ecological and conservation science. \

You will be taught using a range of methods, including:

- group work

Most modules will be taught in Semester 1. This ensures that you'll benefit from peer-support and reach a high technical standard before starting your individual research project. Our international research and teaching partnerships (e.g. Tanzania, Philippines, Malaysia, Brazil) enable opportunities for student projects outside the UK.

## Facilities

The School of Natural and Environment Sciences has an outstanding range of facilities to support your studies, including laboratories for you to carry out your research project.

### NU Farms

During your studies, you'll have access to [Newcastle University Farms](https://www.ncl.ac.uk/farms/). NU Farms is a research, teaching, and engagement platform based across our two local farms.

- **Cockle Park Farm:** 262ha mixed farm that includes the renowned Palace Leas hay meadow experimental plots
- **Nafferton Farm:** 300ha farm with long-running organic versus conventional trial plots

Ecological facilities include:

- more than 800 hectares of farmland
- polytunnels and greenhouse capacity for plant growth and competition experiments, insect-plant interaction studies

### Dove Marine Lab

We study live marine animals at our [Dove Marine Laboratory](https://www.ncl.ac.uk/nes/about-us/facilities/marine/dove-marine-lab/) in Cullercoats. With a live aquarium on-site, you’ll examine and study a range of wildlife.

### The Princess Royal

The Blyth Marine Station and Research vessel, [The Princess Royal](https://www.ncl.ac.uk/nes/about-us/facilities/marine/research-vessel/), a floating laboratory, is an integral part of your learning experience at Newcastle.

Activities on the vessel range from oceanographic characterisation of river plumes to remote camera surveys of offshore habitats.

### Gosforth Nature Reserve

Just 10 minutes from campus is [Gosforth Nature Reserve](https://www.nhsn.org.uk/gosforth-nature-reserve/). This protected area has many habitats and management strategies for carrying out ecological monitoring.

As a general principle, you should expect the tuition fee to increase in each subsequent academic year of your course, subject to government regulations on fee increases and in line with inflation.

[EU, other EEA and Swiss nationals - tuition fee status](#) 

Depending on your residency history, if you’re a student from the EU, other EEA or a Swiss national, with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you’ll normally pay the ‘Home’ tuition fee rate and may be eligible for Student Finance England support.

EU students without settled or pre-settled status will normally be charged fees at the ‘International’ rate and will not be eligible for Student Finance England support. **You may be eligible for a scholarship worth 25% off the international fee**. The course starts in September.

**Closing Dates**

There is no application closing date for this course.

We suggest international students apply at least two months before the course starts. This is so that you have enough time to make the necessary arrangements.

**Specialised application information**

When applying for the MRes Ecology degree programme, you can upload a project plan as supporting information. However, you are not required to do so. Instead you can decide on your project topic and supervisory team in the first months of the degree in consultation with the degree programme director.

The part-time course (4871P) has been withdrawn for 2026 entry.

**Deposit**

**All International students**

If you are an international student or a student from the EU, EEA or Switzerland and you need a visa to study in the UK, you must pay a deposit or submit an official letter of sponsorship. The deposit is payable after you receive an offer to study with us. This deposit is non-refundable and will be deducted from your tuition fees when you register. You may also be subject to academic and English language qualification verification, confirmation of funds and credibility interviews.

**International students who received an offer before 18 March 2026**

- You are required to pay a £1,500 deposit or submit an official letter of sponsorship.

**International students Bangladesh, Ghana, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan who received an offer after 18 March 2026**

- You are required to pay a deposit of £5,000 or submit an official letter of sponsorship by 01 August 2026.

**All International students (excluding those from the markets above) who received an offer after 18 March 2026**

- You are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship by 01 August 2026.

**ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme)**

You may need an [ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme)](https://www.ncl.ac.uk/study/atas/) clearance certificate. You'll need to get this before you can get your visa or study on this programme. We'll let you know about the ATAS requirement in your offer letter.
