About Urban Planning at Newcastle University

Our Urban Planning degrees allow you to explore the built environment and how our cities and neighbourhoods develop. You'll establish a thorough understanding of planning processes, design awareness and housing policy so you're equipped to pursue a career in town planning.

What we offer

Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) accreditation:  \ Our BA Urban Planning degree is partially accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute, providing a spatial qualification and being the first step to a career in planning.  

Our Master of Planning MPlan is professionally accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute and fully meets the educational requirements for chartered membership. 

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accreditation:  \ Our Master of Planning MPlan offers RICS accreditation via its ‘planning and development’ pathway and meets the educational requirements for chartered membership. 

Incredible facilities: Based in the heart of our Newcastle city campus, you’ll have access to a dedicated student base, planning studio, and computing facilities. 

Exciting field trips: As a founder member of the Association of European Schools of Planning, we have strong European links, giving you the chance to experience planning approaches in the UK and beyond.

Your career path

Our graduates do exceptionally well in the job market, both regionally and nationally. Many of our graduates have gone on to pursue accredited Town Planner status. Our graduates have also gone on to become teachers, accountants, solicitors, academics, business managers and officers in the armed forces. 

To become a Chartered Town Planner, you need to fulfil the RTPI educational requirements and then complete two years' experience in planning practice.
