About Modern Languages at Newcastle

Study up to three languages, spend a year abroad and graduate with a range of skills and fluency in a global language.  We offer teaching in:

Combine your language studies with translation and interpreting, business studies, or linguistics, with our flexible and multi-disciplinary courses.

What we offer

Year abroad: All of our Modern Language degrees include a year abroad, so you can immerse yourself in the countries and cultures whose languages you are studying, while perfecting your language skills.

Outstanding facilities: Our award-winning Language Resources Centre hosts learning resources in 150 languages, specialist language-learning software and over 3,000 films and TV shows in dozens of languages.

Renowned staff: Our language degrees are taught by professional language tutors and research-active staff with international reputations in their specialist fields.

Your career path

Ability in languages is highly regarded by employers across all sectors, including industry and business. Employers value the linguistic skills and cultural awareness of graduates.

With ever more European and international connections, language skills are important and give you a real advantage in applying for a wide range of graduate jobs.

For some graduates teaching is a popular career choice, undertaking primary and secondary Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) or teaching English abroad. Others go into jobs where their language skills are desirable, such as the media, sales, e-commerce, and areas of finance.
