Overview
Our Clinical Linguistics and Evidence Based Practice course is for graduates in:
- speech and language therapy
- clinical linguistics
- psychology
- related disciplines with an interest in speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders
This research masters is ideal preparation for a PhD under the ESRC-funded (masters plus PhD) route or for students with NIHR pre-doctoral Clinical Academic Fellowship (PCAF) funding.
The course will cover:
- research methods in the discipline (appropriate to your planned dissertation project and future research)
- advanced scholarship and practice (in areas within that discipline as well as an awareness of current research)
- design and implementation of an original investigation (this includes statistical and/or qualitative analyses and interpretation of findings)
- development of communication skills for sharing findings of clinical investigation with professional audiences (through a conference presentation and manuscript for submission to a scientific journal)

How you'll learn
The course is delivered by Speech and Language Sciences in the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences and HaSS Faculty School X. Teaching is in person on campus.
Depending on your modules, you'll be assessed through a combination of:

Recognition of professional qualifications outside of the UK

Facilities
There is a Language Analysis Lab (LinguaLab) with specialist hardware and software devoted to clinical linguistic and phonetic research and analysis. There are also two on-site clinics which provide assessment and intervention services to adults and children with speech, language and communication difficulties.
These clinics provide clinical placements for our speech and language therapy students and a research facility for staff and students.

As a general principle, you should expect the tuition fee to increase in each subsequent academic year of your course, subject to government regulations on fee increases and in line with inflation.
EU, other EEA and Swiss nationals - tuition fee status
Depending on your residency history, if you’re a student from the EU, other EEA or a Swiss national, with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you’ll normally pay the ‘Home’ tuition fee rate and may be eligible for Student Finance England support.
EU students without settled or pre-settled status will normally be charged fees at the ‘International’ rate and will not be eligible for Student Finance England support. You may be eligible for a scholarship worth 25% off the international fee. Search our funding database.

This course is usually only available to students applying for a studentship from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The course forms part of the 1+3 (Master's plus PhD) scheme under the Northern Ireland and North East Doctoral Training Partnership (NINE-DTP). To start the course your application for ESRC funding must be successful.
If you are a speech and language therapist applying for a NIHR Integrated Clinical and Practitioner Academic (ICA) Programme Pre-doctoral Clinical and Practitioner Academic Fellowship (PCAF) award, please get in touch to discuss relevant available modules and awards. Deposit
All International students
If you are an international student or a student from the EU, EEA or Switzerland and you need a visa to study in the UK, you must pay a deposit or submit an official letter of sponsorship. The deposit is payable after you receive an offer to study with us. This deposit is non-refundable and will be deducted from your tuition fees when you register. You may also be subject to academic and English language qualification verification, confirmation of funds and credibility interviews.

- You are required to pay a £1,500 deposit or submit an official letter of sponsorship.

- You are required to pay a deposit of £5,000 or submit an official letter of sponsorship by 01 August 2026.
