[Open Lab](https://openlab.ncl.ac.uk/) is the leading academic research centre for human-computer interaction (HCI) and ubiquitous computing (Ubicomp) research outside of the USA. It conducts research across a wide range of fundamental topics in HCI and Ubicomp, including:

[Interdisciplinary Computing and Complex BioSystems (ICOS)](#)

We seek to create the next generation of algorithms that provide innovative solutions to problems arising in natural or synthetic systems. [Educational Practice in Computing](#)
The [Educational Practice in Computing](https://www.ncl.ac.uk/computing/research/epic/) group focuses on encouraging, fostering and pursuing innovation in teaching computing science. Through this group, your research will focus on pedagogy. You'll apply your research to maximise the impact of innovative teaching practices, programmes and curricula in the School. Examples of innovation work within the group include:
- teacher training and the national Computing at School initiative
- outreach activities including visits to schools and hosting visits by schools

[Networked and Ubiquitous Systems Engineering (NUSE)](#)
The [NUSE](https://www.ncl.ac.uk/computing/research/nuse/) group provides quality-of-life improvements in the digital age. They address challenges in systems engineering for real-world applications. This includes autonomous transportation, green energy, online safety, big data analysis and digital health.

### Research excellence
We are leading on several initiatives of national and international significance:
- EPSRC Northern Health Futures (NortHFutures) Hub (since 2023)
- EPSRC National Edge AI Hub (since 2024)
We are also collaborating with our regional partners on major consortium projects such as the EPSRC £2.5m investment in the North East Space Communications Accelerator (NESCA). This is a collaboration between:

MPhil, PhD
[MPhil - Master of Philosophy](#)
An MPhil is available in most subject areas. You receive research training and undertake original research leading to the completion of a 40,000 - 50,000 word thesis.

[PhD - Doctor of Philosophy](#)
A PhD is a doctorate or doctoral award. It involves original research that should make a significant contribution to the knowledge of a specific subject. To complete the PhD you will produce a substantial piece of work (80,000 – 100,000 words) in the form of a supervised thesis. A PhD usually takes three years full time.

## How you'll learn
[Delivery and teaching methods](#)
On starting the programme you'll identify and research an open question before formulating an approach to answering it. After agreeing a topic with your supervisor, you'll conduct a literature review and refine your research goals.
Following your initial research you submit a project proposal and give a presentation about your work. Once your project proposal is approved you will conduct your supervised research and write a thesis. Your thesis is also assessed by an oral examination.
Throughout the course of your research you'll write research papers for conferences and journals.

### Postgraduate student facilities
As a Master's student, you'll have access to specialist teaching spaces and facilities in the USB. These are only available to postgraduate students.
Wellbeing and inclusivity are at the heart of our School. The USB has several wellbeing spaces for students, including:
- **The Retreat:** A sensory space with relaxing stimuli to distract from busy student life.
- **Wellbeing room:** Designed for relaxation and quiet time. Here you can take a moment to breathe and unwind. It can also be used by students with special medical requirements.

We are unable to give an exact fee, this is why the fee is shown as a range. This fee range takes into account your research topic and resource requirements.
Your research topic is unique so it will have unique resource requirements. Resources could include specialist equipment, such as laboratory/workshop access, or technical staff.
If your research involves accessing specialist resources then you're likely to pay a higher fee. You'll discuss the exact nature of your research project with your supervisor(s). You'll find out the fee in your offer letter.

### Home fees for research degree students
For **2025-26** entry, we've aligned our standard **Home research fees** with those set by [UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)](https://www.ukri.org/). For **2026-27** entry, we will again be aligning our standard **Home research fees** with UKRI. They will announce their fees in Spring 2026.

As a general principle, you should expect the tuition fee to increase in each subsequent academic year of your course, subject to government regulations on fee increases and in line with inflation.
[EU, other EEA and Swiss nationals - tuition fee status](#)
Depending on your residency history, if you’re a student from the EU, other EEA or a Swiss national, with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you’ll normally pay the ‘Home’ tuition fee rate and may be eligible for Student Finance England support.
EU students without settled or pre-settled status will normally be charged fees at the ‘International’ rate and will not be eligible for Student Finance England support. **You may be eligible for a scholarship worth 25% off the international fee**. ## How to apply
### Before you start
**Start Dates**
There are usually three possible start dates:
- September
- January
- April
In some circumstances, an alternative start date can be arranged.
**Closing Dates**
There is no application closing date for this course, but specific deadlines for funding may apply.
We suggest international students apply at least two months before the course starts. This is so that you have enough time to make the necessary arrangements.
**Specialised application information**
Before you apply you should find and contact a [research supervisor](https://www.ncl.ac.uk/computing/staff/research/) from the [School of Computing](https://www.ncl.ac.uk/computing/).
**Deposit**
**All International students**
If you are an international student or a student from the EU, EEA or Switzerland and you need a visa to study in the UK, you must pay a deposit or submit an official letter of sponsorship. The deposit is payable after you receive an offer to study with us. This deposit is non-refundable and will be deducted from your tuition fees when you register. You may also be subject to academic and English language qualification verification, confirmation of funds and credibility interviews.
**International students who received an offer before 18 March 2026**
- You are required to pay a £1,500 deposit or submit an official letter of sponsorship.
**International students Bangladesh, Ghana, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan who received an offer after 18 March 2026**
- You are required to pay a deposit of £5,000 or submit an official letter of sponsorship by 01 August 2026.
**All International students (excluding those from the markets above) who received an offer after 18 March 2026**
- You are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship by 01 August 2026.
