What you'll learn
You’ll gain a solid foundation in conference interpreting and translation techniques. Core modules include:
- Consecutive Interpreting
- Simultaneous Interpreting
- Public Service Interpreting
These modules all incorporate remote interpreting skills and digital tools.
Throughout the programme you’ll:
- explore specialised areas of interpreting that meet advanced industry demands
- develop high-level interpreting skills focused on spoken language transfer
- gain in-depth knowledge of mainstream and remote interpreting technologies
You’ll also enhance your technological literacy by working with:
- digital interpreting platforms
- audio-visual tools
- remote communication systems
These skills are increasingly essential in today’s interpreting landscape.
Depending on your interests, you may take further optional modules that cover:
- Subtitle and Video Game Translation
- Localisation
- Literary Translation
- Translating for a Big Institution
- Legal Translation
In the summer, you will complete either a dissertation or an interpreting project. The project consists of an interpreting assignment and an academic commentary.

You will study modules on this course. A module is a unit of a course with its own approved aims and outcomes and assessment methods.

Our teaching is informed by research. Course content changes periodically to reflect developments in the discipline, the requirements of external bodies and partners, and student feedback.

Your development
On our Conference Interpreting MA, you will receive enhanced training on:
- theoretical models of interpreting and understanding your workspace and equipment
- the latest development in remote interpreting, or RSI
- performing different modes of interpreting with appropriate techniques on a wide range of topics
- how to leverage a growing base of theoretical knowledge to carry out interpreting assignments that meet industry requirements
- current technicality demanded upon conference interpreters
- ability to adapt and pick up required technical skills for specific jobs
Professional opportunities and development
We organise industry talks, study visits and internship work placements for our students. These will be in the fields of conference interpreting and liaison interpreting.
In the past, we have organised visits to:
- the United Nations Office in Vienna, Geneva and/or Rome
- the EU’s Directorate General for Translation
- the European Commission in Brussels
- international organisations in The Hague
We also arrange interpreting and remote interpreting opportunities with our industry contacts.
We'll also help you:
- take part in conferences as a trainee interpreter
- get academic membership from established interpreter and translator societies (such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists)
- join our Translating and Interpreting alumni networks across five continents
- discover international job opportunities and get career advice

Fees, Funding and Scholarships
Tuition fees for 2026 entry (per year)

As a general principle, you should expect the tuition fee to increase in each subsequent academic year of your course, subject to government regulations on fee increases and in line with inflation.
EU, other EEA and Swiss nationals - tuition fee status
Depending on your residency history, if you’re a student from the EU, other EEA or a Swiss national, with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you’ll normally pay the ‘Home’ tuition fee rate and may be eligible for Student Finance England support.
EU students without settled or pre-settled status will normally be charged fees at the ‘International’ rate and will not be eligible for Student Finance England support. You may be eligible for a scholarship worth 25% off the international fee. Search our funding database.

Academic entry requirements
A 2:2 honours degree or international equivalent.
In addition, we require native English-speaking applicants to have good degree-level knowledge of Chinese. When applying, please enclose any evidence you may have to support your second language proficiency qualification. We will also consider applicants on an individual basis with lower or non-standard qualifications who have at least two years of full-time experience as a translator or an interpreter.

Credit transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) can allow you to convert existing relevant university-level knowledge, skills and experience into credits towards a qualification. Find out more about the RPL policy which may apply to this course
How to apply
Before you start
Start Dates
The course starts in September.
Closing Dates
There is no application closing date for this course.
We suggest international students apply at least two months before the course starts. This is so that you have enough time to make the necessary arrangements, including submitting a visa application.
Specialised application information
Application
You need to upload your IELTS certification onto the Applicant Portal before you can progress to interview. We suggest you submit your application and supporting documents as early as possible so that your interview can be arranged within the timescales. If you do not have an IELTS certificate with the required score at the time of applying, you can submit it later. But you must submit it before your interview date.
Interview
Following your successful application, you will receive a conditional offer. You will also be asked to book an interview.
Interviews are compulsory and are normally held in the Spring.
Deposit
All International students
If you are an international student or a student from the EU, EEA or Switzerland and you need a visa to study in the UK, you must pay a deposit or submit an official letter of sponsorship. The deposit is payable after you receive an offer to study with us. This deposit is non-refundable and will be deducted from your tuition fees when you register. You may also be subject to academic and English language qualification verification, confirmation of funds and credibility interviews.
International students who received an offer before 18 March 2026
- You are required to pay a £1,500 deposit or submit an official letter of sponsorship.
International students Bangladesh, Ghana, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan who received an offer after 18 March 2026
- You are required to pay a deposit of £5,000 or submit an official letter of sponsorship by 01 August 2026.
All International students (excluding those from the markets above) who received an offer after 18 March 2026
- You are required to pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship by 01 August 2026.
