The Royal Academy of Belles Lettres of Barcelona (Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona) was founded in 1729 as a society for the culture and history of Catalonia when the capital of Catalonia lost its university. It has been under royal protection since 1752. In the 19th century its members played a significant role in the Catalan Renaissance movement. Its members are leading researchers in the humanities and social sciences from Catalonia, Spain and the rest of the world.
