Every doctoral research project requires scientific mentoring and every habilitation requires academic assistance, provided either by a single person or by a team of supervisors. If everyone takes an open, fair and transparent approach to working together, this provides a good basis for a successful doctoral project or habilitation. Consideration should also be given to social and cultural aspects, for example balancing family commitments and an academic career.
