Using artificial intelligence to make the Earth a better place – that’s the mission of FAU alumna and doctoral candidate Nora Gourmelon. She analyzes satellite images to determine where glacier ice breaks off and ends up in the ocean. What was once a manual process can now be automated with AI. Her findings are crucial for improving climate models. At FAU, she studied computer science, and today she works as a PhD student at the Pattern Recognition Lab.

Nora is part of the International Doctorate Program (M³OCCA). Here, researchers work together interdisciplinary to advance the measurement and modeling of glaciers and ice caps in a changing climate.

In our interview, Nora Gourmelon shares personal insights into her research, describes her passion for green AI, and explains her commitment to volunteering on issues like mental health.
