Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for the Lebanese Coastal Cities of Batroun and Tyre

The AUB Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs’ Climate Change and Environment program is pleased to share the findings of its project “Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for the Lebanese Coastal Cities of Batroun and Tyre” completed in partnership with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. A team including Nadim Farajalla, Rana El-Hajj, Celine El Khoury, Abed Chehadeh, Celine Yazbek, Simon Derderian, and Farah Katerji worked for nearly a year to develop a vulnerability policy tool that supports coastal municipalities, particularly Batroun and Tyre, in climate change resilience building. The vulnerability policy tool is also designed to inform coastal cities stakeholders and municipality leaders of the vulnerabilities of their cities so that they can better design resilience building activities.\

The findings and scores of the assessments were then visualized into four infographics presented hereafter:

Climate change risks and coastal cities in Lebanon: Profiling the city of Batroun​

The infographic reflects the key features of Batroun city in terms of water resources, energy supply, sanitation and drainage, transport, telecommunication poles, health care and emergency, built environment, ecosystem services, and fisheries. It also identifies Batroun territory, permanent residents, shoreline level, elevation above sea level, and rocky beach. Climate hazards affecting urban settings are also presented with climate change projections for Lebanon as well as temperature and precipitation trends for the city.\

The infographic reflects the key features of Tyre city in terms of water resources, energy supply, sanitation and drainage, transport, telecommunication poles, health care and emergency, built environment, ecosystem services, and fisheries. It also identifies Tyre territory, permanent residents, shoreline level, elevation above sea level, and sandy beach. Climate hazards affecting urban settings are also presented with climate change projections for Lebanon as well as temperature and precipitation trends for the city.\

Vulnerable sectors with scores: The case of Batroun

The infographic presents the scores of the exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity components obtained for each sector and the overall scores obtained in the fisheries, infrastructure, tourism, and water resources sectors based on the formula: Vulnerability = Exposure + Sensitivity- Adaptive Capacity.\
