About Department of Geoscience
Department of Geoscience
The Department of Geoscience was established in 2006 and had its first batch of petroleum geoscience undergraduate students in January 2009. In 2011, the department fragmented into two: the Geosciences Department and the Petroleum Engineering Department under the Faculty of Geosciences & Petroleum Engineering. In 2018, a major revamp at UTP resulted in the Geosciences Department being placed under the Faculty of Science and Information Technology. As of 1 May 2025, the Department of Geoscience is under the Faculty of Science, Management & Computing (formerly known as Faculty of Science and Information Technology.)

Programme Highlights
Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Geoscience
This 3 years and 4 months programme prepares graduates with strong foundations in geology and geophysics, combined with modern, data-driven applications. The programme equips students for diverse careers in the evolving energy and resource sectors. The programme is challenging yet flexible, designed to meet student needs with more than 25% international enrollment.
MSc by Coursework
Tailored to train young graduates and industry professionals on approaches to explore and evaluate new oil and gas fields and characterize reservoirs. Features a curriculum developed with input from Institut Francais du Petrole, Paris and industry experts, including 14 modules, 2 management electives, fieldwork, and a 4-month Industrial Project.
MSc/PhD by Research
Focused on experimentation in research clusters: Integrated Basin Analysis, Advanced Seismic Technology, and Rock Physics & Reservoir Characterisation. First-class facilities with strong funding support and guidance from internationally acclaimed lecturers prepare students for future challenges.
Centers of Excellence
SEACARL
The South-east Asia Carbonate Research Laboratory, inaugurated in March 2009, is dedicated to carbonate studies. Associated with reputable carbonate centers and specialists worldwide to ensure quality teaching and research.
Centre of Excellence in Subsurface Seismic Imaging & Hydrocarbon
Focused on seismic studies for the oil and gas industry, advancing research and innovation in subsurface imaging technologies.
The department continues to grow and adapt to changes in the oil & gas industry, strengthening curricula and exploring research areas that contribute to national development.
