January 15, 2026 - Integrated Engineering Batch 1 students have officially entered Semester 2, and by the end of Week 2, learning has already extended beyond the traditional classroom. The semester began with immersive Virtual Reality (VR) sessions for the topic Introduction to Oil and Gas, embedded within the Fluid Synergy course.

\

Led by Assoc Prof. Ir. Dr. Zahiraniza Mustaffa, who also serves as the Chair of the Integrated Engineering Department, the VR sessions were designed to provide students with early, authentic exposure to the oil and gas industry. Through immersive simulations, students explored industrial environments, processes, and system interactions that closely resemble real operational settings.

\

At IED, learning is intentionally designed to be engaging, varied, and meaningful. Students are not confined to passive lectures or repetitive routines. Instead, their learning journey is shaped through a mix of immersive technologies, hands-on activities, and real-world contexts that keep them actively involved. The VR experience offered students a refreshing and stimulating way to learn—allowing them to move, observe, explore, and question, while experiencing engineering concepts in action rather than on slides.

\

The use of VR enables students to visualise complex engineering systems and workflows that are often abstract when introduced through conventional teaching methods. By placing students “inside” a simulated plant environment, the experience supports deeper conceptual understanding, spatial awareness, and systems thinking—key competencies for engineers working in complex, interdisciplinary settings.

\

More importantly, this early exposure helps students appreciate how foundational engineering concepts connect to real-world applications in the oil and gas sector. Rather than learning in isolation, students begin to see how disciplines converge, how decisions impact entire systems, and how engineers operate within professional, safety-critical environments.

\

These VR sessions reflect the Integrated Engineering programme’s commitment to experiential, industry-aligned learning, where understanding is built through exploration, interaction, and reflection. Introducing such experiences early in the programme sets the tone for how students will learn throughout their academic journey—through curiosity, engagement, and authentic practice.
