A variety of fuels can be produced from biomass resources including liquid fuels, such as, ethanol, methanol, biodiesel and gasoline, and gaseous fuels, such as hydrogen and methane. Biofuels are primarily used on fuel vehicles, but can also fuel engines or in fuel cells for electricity generation. Through thermo chemical conversion research, the Centre is developing technologies to convert biomass such as trees, grass and other materials to fuels and materials. These biofuels will reduce the nation's dependence on fossil fuel, improve air quality and support rural economies.
