### **Core courses**

**Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment**

This course covers the advanced technologies for biological wastewater treatment in removal of biological nitrogen and phosphorus. Wastewater pumping, anaerobic treatment, industrial wastestreams and their treatment.

**Sludge Management and Disposal**

Treatment and disposal of sludge are major factors in design and operations of all wastewater treatment plants. The knowledge of sludge management and disposal is crucial to understand the final stage of treatment in a wastewater treatment plant and to handle the sludge disposal in an appropriate manner.

**Environmental Hazardous Substances and Waste Management**

This course discusses the issues related to municipal and hazardous waste and integrated management of these kinds of waste. It deals the selection and application of suitable methods to achieve the specific waste management objectives and goals. The course covers the solid and hazardous waste issues in Malaysia and abroad, solid and hazardous waste generation reduction, reuse, separation, recycling, collection and transportation, solid and hazardous waste treatment techniques and technologies, incineration and land disposal.

**Advanced Physical-Chemical Treatment Technologies**

Overview of the physical and chemical process to treat industrial wastewater as well as sludge. The focused processes include chemical precipitation, coagulation-flocculation, filtration, adsorption, adsorption, disinfection, nitrogen removal, ion exchange, membrane process, and chemical oxidation.

**Renewable Energy Technology**

Constant depletion of fossil fuels worldwide has led to the search for alternative and renewable sources of energy. This course focuses on the technological and environmental aspects of emerging sources of energy, viz., hydropower, wind, oceanic, solar, geothermal, and biomass. The suitability of each technology will be investigated. On completion of the course, students will have a good understanding of emerging energy sources.

**Air Pollution Prevention and Control**

This course will discuss the basic chemical processes occurring in each region of the atmosphere and the difference between primary and secondary air pollutants and determine the dominant effect of air and list effects on human health. Introduction of air pollution model based on their advantages and disadvantages will explain why a clear and correct understanding of atmospheric science is critical for formulating effective air quality policy.

**Research Project I**

This module focuses on the project proposal preparation, i.e. literature review, problem statement formulation, research objectives and scope, methods (e.g. numerical, experimental, etc.) required to achieve the research objectives, reporting and project proposal defence examination.

**Research Project II**

This module focuses on the implementation of the research project, i.e. data aquisition, results analysis & interpretation, research planning and management, reporting & presentation and continuing professional development.\

### **Elective courses**

**Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Management**

The course provides an introduction to climate change, carbon footprinting and energy management. It presents an overview of different methodologies (e.g. the Greenhouse Gas Protocol) to identify, quantify and account for GHG emissions and plan actions to reduce them.

**Environmental Impact and Risk Management**

Environmental Impact and Risk Assessment (EIRA) is an important tool for public and private development and planning decisions toward creating a sustainable society. EIRA also provide tools that assist in the anticipation and minimization of development’s negative effects and risks. Undertaken in the early stages of project planning and design, EIRA helps shape development in a manner that best suits the local environment and is most responsive to human needs.

**Environmental Management System for Industries**

Overview of Environmental Management System (EMS), environmental legislation, Industry and the Environment, Environmental Management System series of Standard (EMS/ISO14000)

**Contaminated Site Assessment and Remediation**

The aim of this course is to create awareness of the occurrence of and risks posed by contaminants in contaminated soil and groundwater remediation issues and to develop basic engineering skills and knowledge required to identify appropriate groundwater protection and remediation strategies for the contaminated soil and groundwater.

**Spill Prevention and Control**

The aim of this course is to create awareness on the occurrence of solid, liquid and gas spills from industries, and to develop basic engineering skills and knowledge required to provide appropriate prevention and control of such spills as well as the preparation and implementation of spill plan.

**Integrated Solid Waste Management**

This course discusses the issues related to municipal waste and integrated solid waste management of these kinds of waste. It deals the selection and application of suitable methods to achieve the specific waste management objectives and goals. The course is divided into several topics such as: solid waste issues in Malaysia and abroad, solid and waste generation rate, reduction, reuse, separation, recycling, collection and transportation, solid waste treatment techniques and technologies, incineration and design of landfill for disposal.
