**The Dialogue in Migration and Refugee Studies** is a lecture and seminar series hosted by the Migration and Refugees Research Network at Oxford Brookes University. It has received funding from Jean Monnet Actions, run under Erasmus+ by the European Union.
We have a new set of speakers covering a wide range of disciplines, including Criminology, History, Sociology, English Literature and NGO practitioners, among others.

### Migration, enterprise and value creation
Migrants and refugees often struggle to access labour markets, especially during the early stages of their settlement. Consequently, they pursue alternative entrepreneurial routes to facilitate their adjustment. This session by Professor Peter Lugosi (Deputy Director of the Centre for Business, Society and Global Challenges) explores:
a) how diverse migrants engage in enterprises;
b) how their business and organisational practises intersect with ‘identity work’; and
c) how they and stakeholders are embroiled in practises of value creation.\

### Migration and Refugee Studies in Practice
This lecture by Kairos Europe will focus on a national and international perspective about fieldwork implemented by NGOs supporting migrants (refugees and asylum seekers). We will analyse multiple projects aimed to aid protection and integration with a focus on the lecturer’s experience with unaccompanied minors, young women, adults and survivors of trafficking. The presentation will show examples on fieldwork in the UK, Italy and other European countries, and will provide an insight on practical considerations including challenges and good practice.

### How anthropologists study mobile people in today's world
This lecture by Dr Karen Hough, Sheffield Hallam University will explore how anthropologists study the role of technology in migration, by focusing specifically on the methods they use to carry out their research, as well as the ethical and data protection challenges, they face. We will examine the findings from two current, transnational migration projects [MIICT](https://www.miict.eu/) and [Perceptions](https://project.perceptions.eu/) which show in detail how migrants, including asylum seekers and refugees use digital technology to aid their migration journeys.

### Sporting 'ethnoscapes': migrant flows in sport
In this lecture, Dr Stuart Whigham,Senior Lecturer in Sport, Coaching and Physical Education, will explore the reasons for increasing migration in sport, linked to the increasingly globalised nature of the international sporting system. We critically examine the potential impact of increased 'migrant flows' on the nature of contemporary sport for 'host' nations. We will also consider the role sport plays in relation to the assimilation and acclimatisation of migrants into the new 'host' nation.

### Refugees in cities
The majority of the world's refugees live outside of camps, in towns and cities across the world. Their presence in urban locations is increasingly recognised by governments, UN agencies, humanitarian organisations, and civil society. However, there are still considerable challenges in understanding urban refugees' experiences of displacement and the role of humanitarians in such contexts. In this introductory lecture, Dr Zoe Jordan, Senior Lecturer at CENDEP, will consider some of the key aspects of urban displacement.

### Border Criminology: The intersection of migration and criminal justice
In this lecture, Dr Alice Gerlach, Lecturer in Criminology, will provide participants with an overview of the key issues related to globalisation, punishment and migration that are the focus of Border Criminologists. In this session we will introduce participants to the fundamental areas of investigation within this sub-field of criminology, notably citizenship, identity and belonging, placing them within the historical and evolving context of globalisation and migration.
