About us

Since the early modern period, literature has explored how technology can transform human experience. Our research reveals the intersections between humans and machines, focusing in particular on questions of gendered identity and embodiment.

We have particular strengths in modernist avant-garde cultures, speculative fiction, twentieth-century ‘reading machines’, and the interface between literature and AI.

Our researchers are considering how augmented reality brings art to life, how computing technology positions us in real and virtual worlds, and how contemporary dramatists are building on the legacy of nineteenth-century scientific innovation. Other group members are working on the technology of the Renaissance anatomy theatre, and artificial constructions of the male body in contemporary prose fiction.
