Apps – short for applications – are programs that are designed to be run entirely within a web browser or on a mobile platform. Unlike desktop applications, apps are lightweight in terms of computing (but not functionality) easy to install, easy to combine, and usually easier to use.

Apps can be easier to design and build than larger-scale applications. Some researchers are turning to app design to get ahead.

We have the skills and experience to help and support you through the process, right from concept and design through to delivery, support and reporting. We can also help guide you through any necessary legal, financial or ethical processes.

Benefits of using apps

Developing a new and innovative way to collect and/or process research data e.g. from people with access to smartphones, or from mobile devices themselves (e.g. GPS locations).
To support research collaborations especially with people who predominantly have access to mobile devices.
Utilising the functionalities of mobile phones for enhanced collection of research data, including GPS location mapping.
For communicating about your research, especially with stakeholders who use mobile devices (e.g. young people, people living in areas without good broadband or power supplies).
Income generation from research and/or consultancy.
Engaging the public with research
Enhancing the end user experience, knowledge and skills.
Will there be a guaranteed interest in downloading and using the app? (Research the Market in advance).
Might it bring in income to the University?
Will it improve/enhance Brookes' reputation and/or enhance knowledge and skills within or beyond academia?
Does a similar app already exist or is it a new (or radically improved) idea/format etc?
Can something be created simply and with a straightforward user interface etc?

Developing your own research app

Before embarking on having an App developed please explore existing apps thoroughly. The increasing availability of apps and the ease with which they can be developed means there is often already something that will do what you need. Please consider the following:

Will there be a guaranteed interest in downloading and using the app? (Research the Market in advance).
Might it bring in income to the University?
Will it improve/enhance Brookes' reputation and/or enhance knowledge and skills within or beyond academia?
Does a similar app already exist or is it a new (or radically improved) idea/format etc?
Can something be created simply and with a straightforward user interface etc?
