The Research Degrees Committee considers research degree policy matters and any general issues relating to research students.
It is responsible for developing and maintaining standards on the programme. It produces regulations and codes of practice in line with QAA and HEFCE guidelines and makes policy recommendations to the Research and Knowledge Transfer Committee.
The Committee is also responsible for continually monitoring the programme at all levels across the University to ensure that Faculties are working within regulations and codes. It also:
- monitors supervision and student’s progress
- reviews facilities both at Faculty and University level
- reports its findings to the Research and Knowledge Transfer Committee and the University via its Annual Report.

Meetings will be held between 1.30pm to 3.30pm and will take place online until further notice.

Research Degrees Sub-Committees
There are two subject Sub-Committees, Humanities, Environment and Social Sciences and Science and Technology.
They are responsible for reviewing and approving the various stages of the student’s progression through the programme from:\
- registration
- transfer to PhD
- approval of examination arrangements
- recommendations following viva
- conferment of the award.
