About

The scholarship was established in 2011 and each year since has enabled a postgraduate student from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel to study for a Master’s degree at Oxford Brookes University. Students are selected on the basis of merit, academic ability and financial need.

Here at Oxford Brookes, we believe in encouraging, challenging and supporting our students to be the very best they can and achieve their goals. On this page, you can find out about a the achievements of our previous Israeli scholars. As students they brought cultural richness and fresh perspectives to our University community and as graduates they are making their mark on the world.

“It was a great experience and I'm very happy that I had the chance to take part in it. Thank you, everyone, for being part of the journey I have taken this year. To the University, which really has pushed me and wanted for my success, and to the Jewish community and all our friends here. Thank you for the financial help and for the emotional help.”

Adi Jackson, 2023-24 Sam Zuckerberg Scholar

A brief history of the scholarship

Back in 2009, members of the Oxford Jewish Congregation suggested setting up a scholarship to bring an Israeli student to Oxford Brookes. The aim was to foster dialogue on campus and in the city, promoting understanding of Israeli-Palestinian relations, Middle Eastern politics, and intercultural issues through respectful, informed discussions.

An initiative was launched to set up the “Oxford Brookes University Israel Scholarship” and fundraising duly started amongst the OJC members, family and friends. Contact was established with Ben-Gurion University (BGU) and the search also began for the first recipient. As the work moved forward, news of the scholarship spread and there was even a mention during a debate in the House of Lords. Thanks to the generosity of donors, enough funds were raised to select the first recipient of the scholarship, who joined Oxford Brookes in September 2012.

In 2013, past chairman of the BGU Board of Governors Roy J. Zuckerberg, upon hearing about the impact the scholarship was having and the need to secure its future, gave a donation in memory of his late father Sam Zuckerberg. The scholarship officially became known as the “Sam Zuckerberg Scholarship”.

The generosity of the donation has eased the burden of fundraising for the scholarship greatly although there is still a funding gap that needs to be filled.
