The Paleontological Museum was established by Professor Eduard Hoffmann in 1863 as the Paleontological Cabinet within the Twelve Collegia building. From 1869, Professor Alexander Inostrantsev significantly expanded the paleontological collections, incorporating them into the Geological Cabinet-Museum. He facilitated the University's acquisition of Professor Karl von Eichwald's unique paleontological collection, which accompanied his monograph 'Lethaea rossica, ou, Paléontologie de la Russie'. Assembled in the 19th century, this collection encompasses paleontological finds from across Russia and contains numerous type specimens of diverse fossil organisms.

A second museum site was founded in 1919 by Professor Mikhail Yanishevsky as the Paleontological Cabinet of the Department of Paleontology (16th Line 29, Vasilievsky Island). Today, the unified scientific collections on both sites of the Paleontological Museum comprise approximately 55,000 specimens, and are published under the acronym PMSPU.

The museum only admits visitors as part of guided tour groups. The schedule for group tours can be found via the link.
