Programme description

The master’s programme "Professional Speech Activity in Mass Media" is aimed at graduates who wish to continue their studies and gain fundamental knowledge and new professional skills. For those who have an educational background in journalism, the programme provides an opportunity to acquire special knowledge, skills and abilities in speech communication and international communication. For those who have an educational background in other fields, the programme provides an opportunity to apply specific knowledge in their professional speech activities.

The programme "Professional Speech Activity in Mass Media" is unique in that it is a double-degree programme implemented in partnership with Beijing International Studies University (BISU).

The programme "Professional Speech Activity in Mass Media" is designed to meet the needs of society in:

The university clinical model of internships is used during the training in the programme. This makes it possible to motivate and guide St Petersburg University students towards creative and professional fulfilment. Internships at the University clinics can be preceded and accompanied by training sessions. While doing the internships, students participate in professional activities or processes that simulate different types of professional activities. The programme is well-suited to applicants with a wide range of backgrounds (bachelor’s, specialist’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees). It is for all those who want to gain versatile skills in creating, analysing and evaluating media texts, as well as those who want to broaden their competencies in professional speech.

Main areas of research

The programme involves the scientific study of: various aspects of Russian and foreign media (journalism techniques, and language and style of the media); and other types of mass communication based on uniquely designed methodology and methods. It provides an opportunity to: obtain theoretically and practically significant results and conclusions; study intercultural communications issues that influence the efficiency of intercultural and interlanguage contacts; prepare or participate in scientific seminars, conferences and discussions; and carry out teaching and educational activities.

Career opportunities

The graduates can pursue a career of a literary editor of mass media (including international media), a speechwriter, a rewriter, a copywriter, an intercultural communication expert, a teacher of Russian / Chinese (as well as the Russian and Chinese cultures), an organiser of mass public intercultural communication (creator of international media projects).

To concentrate and institutionalise this work, St Petersburg University issued the local normative act "On Approving Methodological Recommendations for the Preparation of Agreements on Cooperation in the Implementation of Academic Programmes with Foreign Partners"; and drafted guidelines for organising networking cooperation in the implementation of academic programmes at St Petersburg University.
