Programme description
- The 'Gene and Cell Technologies' programme provides fundamental and practical training in numerous fields of biology which are rapidly developing because of increased use of gene and cell technologies. The acquired knowledge and skills will allow graduates to apply modern approaches and methods to solve a wide range of practical problems in such areas as biomedicine, pharmacology, bioengineering, biotechnology, agriculture, etc
- Students are able to carry out research-oriented and practical activities on the basis of St Petersburg University or partner organisations, such as the Institute of Cytology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, including The Cell Technology Center, All-Russia Institute for Agricultural Microbiology, which has one of the largest agronomic microorganisms’ cultures collection. The University provides unique opportunities for this: the cutting-edge equipment of the Research Park; the richest information resources; and communication with leading scientists from Russia and abroad
- Graduates of the 'Gene and Cell Technologies' programme are able to conduct research and development in both fundamental and applied areas, as well as effectively solve specific practical problems related to knowledge intensive technologies
- Upon completion of the programme, graduates are awarded the additional qualification ‘Teacher of Additional Education’

Our Advantages
- The programme is designed to train experts who are capable of effectively solving applied, including interdisciplinary, challenges on the basis of fundamental biological knowledge. Of particular importance in training students is their in-depth knowledge of the cutting-edge approaches to working with: cells; cell cultures; microbial consortia; and biological material banks. Students also master the most important genetic tools for working with biological material, including: genomic editing; transcriptional regulation factors; and management of protein-protein interactions and mechanisms of matrix processes of hereditary information transfer. The acquired skills will enable graduates to successfully apply and improve existing methods and technologies as well as develop new ones to meet their specific challenges
- The knowledge and skills acquired after studying in the programme will provide graduates with job prospects in: biotechnological companies; medical institutions; research institutes; agroindustrial production associations; and other organisations whose activities are related to the application of cell and genetic technologies
- While obtaining the additional qualification ‘Teacher of Additional Education’, students acquire the competencies necessary to work within the system of additional education
