Programme description

The master’s programme "Slavonic Languages and Literatures" provides training in a broad range of cutting-edge methods of linguistic or literary analysis. It also broadens the students’ philological culture. The programme combines a set of theoretical and applied linguistic or philological disciplines with elective courses individually chosen by students in accordance with their interests and the topic of their graduation projects. Graduates of the programme have an opportunity to continue their research in doctoral programmes. They can also work as: translators/interpreters; teachers of Slavonic languages and literatures at secondary and higher educational institutions; literary critics; and publishers.

- Main Slavic language (Belarusian, Bulgarian, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Ukrainian, Croatian, Czech – by choice)
- Western European Language (English, German, French – by choice)
- Key Issues in Morphology and Syntax of Slavonic Languages (the language of choice)
- Old Church Slavic / Diachronic Aspects of Slavonic Languages / Methods of Teaching Slavonic Languages (an elective course)
- Translation Studies/Current Issues in Stylistics (an elective course)
- Issues in Literary Translation
- Comparative Grammar of Slavonic Languages / Comparative Slavonic Literary Studies (an elective course)
- Historical Anthropological Aspects of Comparative Studies in Literature / Key Issues in the History of National Literature (an elective course)
- History and Theory of Slavonic Lexicography / Slavonic Phraseology/Slavonic Paroemiology (an elective course)
- Slavonic-British Intercultural Relations / Slavonic-Germanic Intercultural Relations / Inter-Slavic Literary Connections / Introduction to Ukrainian Studies (an elective course)

- The graduates are capable of applying the acquired knowledge in the following areas: research at the Russian Academy of Sciences (for example, the Institute of Linguistic Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences or the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences), research and teaching activity at higher education institutions, teaching at other educational institutions, translation, editorial work at publishing houses, museum work, librarianship and other humanities
