- The programme "Hydrosphere and Atmosphere: Modelling and Forecast" equips students with a high scientific and professional level, enabling them to succeed in both scientific and practical fields
- The central focus is on modelling and forecasting in different areas of hydrometeorology. This approach enables graduates to be prepared for complex tasks related to: climate change; and risk assessments of dangerous changes in the atmosphere and natural waters affecting the living conditions and economy of societies

Our advantages
- The academic programme is designed to train specialists with fundamental theoretical knowledge and research skills in climatology, oceanology and land hydrology. They will be able to: use the cutting-edge monitoring systems and computer simulation of atmospheric and hydrological processes; and identify the risks of dangerous changes in the state of the atmosphere and natural waters that affect living conditions and the economy of societies.
- A fundamental modern education in theoretical and applied climatology, hydrology and oceanology is provided by this programme. In Russia, it is taught only at St Petersburg University and Moscow State University.
- Individual training of students is provided under the supervision of specialists.
- There is a wide range of elective courses. This makes it possible to build an educational path that will enable students to receive advanced training in one of the areas.
- There is an opportunity to work on advanced unique equipment in the resource centres of St Petersburg University and laboratories of leading research institutions.
- There are joint projects of large field research with foreign partners, including expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic.
- There are extensive contacts with public and private institutions that are interested in hydrometeorological research and are potential employers.
- Students take part in research activities supported by grants from: St Petersburg University; the Russian Foundation for Basic Research; the Russian Humanitarian Science Foundation; the Government of St Petersburg; and the Russian Geographical Society. They also participate in: conferences; seminars; and symposia. These include the annual international student scientific conference ‘The Great Geographical Festival’, and the international research/practice conference ‘Vinogradov Conference’.
